Texas Pool - Winter Care?

Hi,

First off, I’ve learned how to maintain my pool explicitly through TFP. I just became a pool owner earlier this year and have a crystal clear pool now. So thanks!

Seeing that I’m in my first year of owning a pool, I’m curious what I need to do throughout the off season when it’s too cold to swim.

I’m in Texas, so the coldest it typically gets is in the 30’s and rarely drops below freezing or snows. It is getting cooler already and there will only be a few days ahead that it’ll be warm enough to swim.

Questions:
1. Do I need to take any steps to winterize?
2. Do I need to continue adding chlorine or can I just let it go until it’s time to open again when it’s warmer?
3. Do I need to maintain my chemical balance outside of chlorine?

Thanks in advance for any info or advice!

B,

You need to maintain your pool just like you do now... The main difference is that the chlorine demand will drop way off as the water gets colder.

This past winter with the big freeze and a lot of power outages was not normal, but it would be a good idea to keep it in mind, so that if it happens again, you will know what to do..

If you don't already know, find out how to drain your filter and how to drain your pump basket in case the power goes out in the middle of another big freeze. You want to be able to drain anything above ground that has water in it..

In my pool operation, the only difference between summer and winter is that I can't swim in the winter. I still have to run my robot, clean my skimmers, add water, and routinely test the chemicals.

Thanks,

Jim R.

We talk about it here as well.
