Can't get rid of dead algae.

You can close whenever it's a good time for you. That's also the ideal time to inspect the laterals - once the system is shut down. That will also take care of the deep cleaning issue, so 2 birds with one stone.
So just to be clear, I can leave the pool three quarters full with no filter and leave it? Won't algae start to form?

You could just leave things as-is for now and maintain the pool like normal until you close. You certainly can deep clean before closing if you want, but you're going to have to tear down the filter later anyways to inspect the laterals, so you could just wait. Since you will be removing all the sand to inspect the filter components, that kind of takes care of the deep clean issue. By following the winterization instructions just before shutting down your pool, the water should remain algae-free.

I’m on the Seacoast of NH too and we close late Sept, early Oct. we drain down about 25%. Usually some green when we open And usually the CYA is gone. SLAM for a week and we’re good.

I feel your pain. It's very frustrating.
here is an update. I raised the cya to about 40ppm and then shocked the pool to bring FC to about 10-12 ppm day before yesterday (at night).. and maintained the chlorine level at about 5-6 ppm for about 36 hrs. by adding more shock, and this morning water is all clear and don't see the deposits.. we will see !
(yesterday I did brushing and vacuuming twice.)

Starting to think I have a damaged sand filter. Added DE this morning and vacuumed. Kept filter running afterwards and within 30 minutes had white stuff sticking to the crevices on the bottom of the pool instead of brown stuff, which I'm guessing is DE. Later in the day the pressure was getting a little high in the filter so I backwashed. After that the brown stuff started collecting on the bottom.
Following to see what you find out - I'm seeing almost the exact same thing you're seeing. Clear water, minimal overnight loss, but having a hard time from getting the crud on the bottom from reappearing. When filtering to waste gets better. Have kept FC elevated at SLAM level for several days in a row with limited improvement. When I filter on the filter setting - the stuff just blows right through and back into the pool through return.

You can put a sock over the return and see if it collects anything.
