This may sound very dumb, but our pool was just finished up today, and when I took the lid off of the Skimmer, the vacuum plate was “floating” in the skimmer . Where is this plate supposed to be when not in use? Thanks

Just floating in the skimmer - not attached as if you would when vacuuming the pool . Where does this plate typically belong when not in use?

I can't help you, but for now you should probably remove the plate so your basket will pick up debris. Hopefully someone familiar with these can help.
Thanks for the help - figured out a little piece was not secure and it fell off of the skimmer lid, so crisis averted!
