Coming chlorine shortage? - It is Here!

Check cleaning supply places. Especially places that supply power washer companies. They buy LC in bulk. But a quick google search yielded this.

I am seeing some outrageous prices on the Internet for liquid chlorine in the DFW area. Some store seem still sold out. Leslie's wants over $6/gallon for theirs. The last I found was 6 months old at Lowe's but I was desperate and bought a few gallons. Does anyone have any suggestions for a stable source of liquid chlorine at the time of major supply chain issues??

Not sure if it’s true or not, but I just received this email. Super thankful to have found you guys and not rely on pucks like a lot of people do!

I am visiting my brother in Omaha. Stopped by their closest Walmart. Tons of Pool Essentials chlorinating liquid.

I’m still seeing fully stocked 10% liquid chlorine at both Home Depot and Walmart over here in west Fort Worth. DM me if you need exact addresses; there was even a full section of tabs and powdered shock at Home Depot yesterday.

Hi. I wasn't really sure where to post this.

With the shortage of chlorine this year, how are you getting the most bang for you buck to purchase chlorine for your pool?
I usually use a combination of pucks (just enough to maintain CYA) and liquid bleach or chlorine. Sometimes the liquid pool chlorine is a better price,
sometimes bleach (based on percentage of chlorine.).

I ran out of pucks at the end of last year, and didn't hear about the fire that is causing the chlorine shortage this year, and was completely shocked to find what
the cost to buy any if you could find them by pool opening this year.

I ended up buying CYA, and Liquid Pool Chlorine from Walmart. However I just went to purchase more, and Walmart near me is already backordered/out of the liquid pool
chlorine. I have not checked the bleach recently, but I know the price of bleach has gone up for the percentage of chlorine this year also. And I am betting they are going to
be running out of stock on that too.

I am worried about the cost and ability to find chlorine sources this year.

What is everybody here doing?

Thanks you!

I'm grateful the chlorine supply is still looking good here in AZ. I see tabs all over. Liquid chlorine is in abundance. I just picked up 5 gallons of 10% at Walmart with a date of 21152. They had a whole pallet of it and another pallet and a half of some 21133 dates. I feel for you all in areas with short supply.

Same at my local Home Depot.

So far the Ace in Mt Airy has had 10% liquid chlorine every time we've needed it. (More expensive than Walmart.) Also the Food Lion next door has had regular own brand bleach whenever we've been in there - gallons at 7.5% and smaller containers at 10% so the are effectively about the same - and it works fine. We are only using liquid chlorine until the beginning of July when we can put salt in the pool again for our SWCG (had the sunshelf replastered early June so waiting a bit on the salt). Hopefully the LC holds out until then! The SWCG route is great - if that is an option for you.

I've stabilized my pool (a bit on the lower side I believe it's at 30-40) and have been putting in liquid chlorine daily (10%). I have about 8 bottles left which probably will last me maybe until end of July. I can't find any more near me. If I am unable to find it, what would you suggest I use in place of it? The only thing my local stores have are the 8 in 1 shock products that seem to do too much. Not sure if I can use those without it messing up my CYA or other levels. My pH and TA are within good ranges.

Can I just buy clorox bleach and use that? Or should I try the 8 in 1 granulated stuff my local store has?

You can use plain old bleach. The generic stuff is sold at my local Menard's for $2.99/gal and it is 8.25%. Don't get bleach that has additives or is advertised as "splashless" or "chloromax" or anything like that. Just plain old bleach in the highest concentration you can find will work just fine. You'll use a little more since it is typically 6% or 8.25%, but at least you'll have chlorine. My local Menard's has pallets of that stuff in stock, yet the "Pool Shock" (12.5%) product is usually sold out.

Odd huh. I was able to find a hardware store two towns over that has a box of 4 liquid chlorine bottles in stock so I'll grab that and then start looking for plain old bleach. Thanks for the tips. It was the percentage and other additives that I wasn't sure about.

You are in Boston,
your local pool store may be out, but Walmart has liquid chlorine, or Ocean State Job Lot, or Ace Hardware.

I will definitely look around more. I've been searching online first and walking in to my local hardware store I always buy it from. They said early on they are seeing a big shortage so I bought 4 cases. I'm half through that already and they are all out now so I got worried it was a wide shortage.

I don't think we will run out, I think the price will go up and stay up for a little bit, but here in New England we can also drain or partially drain and refill depending on your pool. Not ideal but if desperate times call for it, you can always use some trichlor as a last resort until you get more liquid chlorine and partial drain and refill. Again I don't think that will be necessary since I don't believe they will run out of liquid chlorine, but pricing will increase for sure.

Plenty of liquid chlorine around here, as well as calcium hypochlorite.

Some tricolor pucks to found (some even at regular retail prices), but only in large quantities (35 pounds or more). I thought about buying some, but I really don't need a bucket of 70 pucks sitting around my garage for the next two to three years (just need a dozen or so to get the Cya up, as well as for scrubbing algae off the sides of the walls).
