Please, help me understand the TFP way and why anyone would want to work on their pool daily?

Not long term. Almost all pucks are TRi-chlor, meaning they contain CYA. That CYA will build up in your pool over time unless you change out the water. Eventually the high CYA will drive your needed FC level to an unsustainable level. Pucks are good for vacation, or if you need to add CYA to your pool (i.e lower level after a big rainstorm). Otherwise, not normally advised.

I am on a well. Is that why it could be there?

A lot of pools built 15-20 years ago had this system. It puts metals in the water for algae control. They don't do a lot (a little) and they tend to stain pools and turn hair color (blond to green). If you can get it opened, you could remove the cartridge inside. It looks like it is already broken as the top is missing long term I'd suggest removing it altogether and put a pipe in its place.

Not going to lie, this is all a little overwhelming. I guess that is how it goes when you don't really know much about a topic. I tried to pick up liquid chlorine at walmart this morning and they were out. I hate admitting this, but I tossed a few of the pucks I have in the skimmer basket, because my thought was party on Saturday and no chlorine vs a tiny bit of copper in the short run.

I saw someone said home depot, lowes, and or Leslies (20 min drive) carry liquid chlorine. Should I pull the pucks and run out and get some liquid?

If you can’t find chlorine you can use bleach. Stay away from Clorox bleach and any bleach with any additives. None of the scented or splash-less bleach. It’s just chlorine in a weaker concentration.

Edit: It might seem a bit overwhelming now, but you will get up to speed more quickly then you probably realize.

Also stay away from ANYTHING with blue in the name(i.e. Blue-Max) as those almost always have copper, which causes staining issues

So I won’t lie, I haven’t read a large majority of this thread as it appears to be moving fast. That said, this comment worries me as it’s not a good thing to be overwhelmed. Let’s start easy, have you been able to order a proper test kit?

Check Lowe's, Home Depot, and Leslie's. They all carry Liquid Chlorine. I got lucky and my local hardware store (small regional chain) also carries it.
Ok. So

1. get the chlorine at lowe's which apparently is in stock and was across the street from walmart.
2. Test kit arrives tomorrow. Need to check to make sure it's not super old.
3. Then test add to pool math which I subscribed to today
4. Then post results?
