OB Northern California (Roseville) Rehab / buried

Outstanding transformation. It is truly amazing where you started till this complete pool. What a joy you'll have this spring and summer enjoying the pool. My hat's off to you.

Yes, this was an awesome thread. Thanks for posting.
Really makes you wonder what people are thinking when they bury pools?!?!?
We have friends that buried theirs here in AZ. She said their ficus tree's roots kept damaging the pool so they got rid of the pool because she liked the tree more. She said her kids never went out there and were getting married so there wasn't a reason to have it. Except for them to bring their kids to Grandma's house to swim. I don't get it 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Micro fusion Laguna w/ glass and abalone
good evening. I was just reading over your post and absolutely love your pool finish. I see the micro fusion laguna w/ abalone on the finest finish website. My question is how did you get glass added to the mix? Did you just ask or was that an option that your builder provided? I do the radiant fusion has glass but that's an extra grand that my builder is charging for the radiant fusion. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I it was actually recommend by the guys doing the finish. They basically said you can pay the extra to get radiant fusion. ( Premixed in Batches) or we can save you some money and hand toss. So I went hand tossed heavy on the ledge and bench.

I believe the mix was 3 bags abalone and 3 kobalt glass

very nice. I'll ask my builder if they can do that for me. Is the finish pretty smooth? Any cuts or scrapes because of the finish. Thanks again for your input.

Yeah, never hurts to save a few bucks. I haven't been in the pool yet. Did some walking around the ledge. Pretty smooth. My kids have done a little swimming, no complaints or red cherries on their feet

So... I'm ready for heating options. My initial thought was to give it a season then decide. I don't think it's going to take that long. We need a heating option.

We are not interested in Gas.

Here is my current plan. Looking at 2 phase approach

Phase 1- Solar heating ( if we don't achieve target go phase 2

Phase 2 - Raypak 140btu heat pump.

Goal is to start season earlier (April ish) and end later ( October ish) in Northern California

Questions : looks like a there is really only 2 options for Solar Fafco or heliocol. What do you guys recommend?

Looking at at least 10 - 10*4 panels

I installed 14 Fafco solar for our pool last year. We don’t use a solar cover so we have a couple of “extra” panels to make up the difference. Pool heats up to 85 (or more) pretty easy most days. We love it.

I'm curious, why have you summarily ruled out gas? I would think a gas heater would be a better option for phase II, its faster, cheaper and if you decide to heat the pool in the dead of winter.. you can. And I would think the cost comparison of the two units is pretty much a wash. Please enlighten me.
Hey MGuzzy

Unfortunately, I opted not to run gas line during the build. It's about a 60ft run from the meter. Would need to demo like 20 feet of concrete. Which in reality is not a big deal, I will eventually have to re pour that part of the side yard.

Besides the obvious additional demo work from gas. Heat pump would be very easy a few feet of conduit equipment is right next to main panel. Additionally we have some of the cheapest electric rates in the area Roseville electric.

What do you think? Is the heat pump a mistake. Really not looking for winter swimming. Just wanted an earlier start.

What solar panels would you recommend. I'm looking at 400 to 500 sqf of coverage. Should be about 10- 13 panels

Yeah.. that would factor big time into it. Is that whole 60ft under concrete? I've seen some pretty interesting trenchless boring done these days.. Anyway, what power company grid are you on, Roseville/Rockline Electric? I'm in Orangevale and we use SMUD for electricity and PGE for gas. All of my neighbors have swapped the heat pumps on their houses for Gas heaters because it was cheaper, I think its still the case. Most of the heat pumps I've seen installed for pools were in the hotter climes (south and southwest) where there wasn't such a big potential temp difference. But who knows, perhaps the tech has gotten better since the last time I looked into it. That is why I thought gas would be a better choice.. Hey where's @Dirk ? He lives in the Central Valley and always has a plethora of ideas.

The last time I dealt with pool solar was for my parents in Merced. They had solar panels added in the 70's and it really only extended their swim season by 2 weeks on either end. Granted that was a long time ago, so they may be more efficient now. But I think a lot of that is a function of how fast the seasons change in Northern CA... At least it seems that way to me. I would love to put solar on my pool, but my whole property is under a grove of giant oaks. There is only one corner of the yard that gets much direct sunlight.. I would hate to cover it up with Solar panels.

This company isn't mentioned often but they make a great panel kit and was one the first companies to offer them. I had these at my first house /pool.
They were well out of warranty and still operating rock solid.

Well finally decided to take on the DIY solar project.

Im on the final stages of tuning the system for max efficiency. (Speed and run times). I have read few article that recommend not turning on the solar system till around Mid May out here in Northern California. Next we will see mid 80's so I might give it a run at least for tuning purposes.

Take a look at the pictures? See if you guys see any errors or areas of improvement. I'm pretty happy with out come. I'm not crazy about the feed and return connection at the equipment. That was the best I could do without cutting up the pad or re-pluming a good portion.

Haven't painter pipes going up to the roof. Paint the whole house soon, will be matching them

The biggest thing I see are all those other empty roof tops around you that are solar collector ready!.. just run a little pipe over there, they will never know the difference. Comon' do it ;)

Seriously.. it looks great.. YEAH.. take advantage of the warm weather and fire that puppy up. I heard its supposed rain on Sunday.. see how warm you can get it before it rains!

I wish I could, I do have room for 1 more 4*12 panel on the flat roof array. Could probably add a third array on the house roof adding another 128sqf. Currently sitting at 9 panels 436sqf. We will see how it performs. Hopefully I won't need more. But it's set up to upgrade if need be

I'm going to be watching to see how well it does for you. We want to add solar heat too, but I'm nervous about hastening our need for a new roof. When we finally re-roof we will probably add solar.
First I need salt!

Anyhow, looks great! I've been watching this thread from the beginning.
