Reviving out of service pool: FG & deck Refresh

SLAM day 3, Tues 9/8
AM

Not much different than ending yesterday - maybe a little more cloudy from muck I'd stirred up yesterday. Sprinkling, so gloomy overhead.

Maybe a little lighter; can barely see 3rd step and stuff to be vacuumed in shallow end.

------------------

Feel like I have a newborn around - feeding chlorine every 2 hours.

Light showers off & on all day. Didn't get to build manual vac/alt sucker (skimmer alternative for suction) module until this morning. Had trouble getting pump to prime with alt sucker, so redid all of the threaded joints adding thread goo. Ok now, but too late to try vac and it's raining anyhow.

Manual vac line is unpainted & goes across rock wall.

Testing alt sucker; the manual vac section is in front of bucket & replaces alt sucker at the back right union. Left end will connect to a short vac hose which connects to a leaf catcher connected to the main vac hose.

Water connection works like a charm - turn on and fills pipe from pad connection to pool = fast pump prime. (y)

Probably not going to get much done tomorrow - 80% t-storms forecasted. Hoping I won't lose ground. Satisfied so far and haven't even started the filter. (y) Itching to try out the vac on what I can see in the shallow end. 🧗‍♀️

Pool gods were kinder to me today w.r.t. t-storms than last week. Went out about 10:00 to very light rain for a manual vac-to-waste of the shallow end. Rain ended and even sun came out for a few minutes. :) Could almost see vac head as it moved - if only just a couple of inches clearer. 😲 Only drama was when I opened leaf canister to clean it, a scorpion landed on my shorts and proceded to climb. Sure glad I had an elastic waistband for quick strip. :ROFLMAO: Didn't get me.

Here's the manual vac setup

Researching to buy a robot vac now. Hopefully won't need to drag this module out in the future, but nice to have just in case.

Was planning to rest a bit then scoop the rest of the pool, but the pool gods decided I'd done enough and started up the t-storms. They were kind enough to give me a couple of breaks so I could continue to run my tests. (y)

Tomorrow going to finally get the filter going. Would never have believed I would have this much progess with just recirc. 😲

I love the swamp to clear journey, and I too am hoping the USO (Unidentified Submerged Object) isn‘t Jimmy!

I would suggest you power wash your deck now, if any dirt falls in might as well be during a slam.
A little extra bleach on the deck during cleaning wouldn't be amiss in the pool either.
Would be wasted effort at this point. When I scoop, lots of dirty water on deck.

What is the building over there? Love the stone work on it!
Not sure which one you're talking about.

Early season cold front: 58° now - close to winter temps for here. (n)(n)(n) Had 2+" of rain overnight and was hoping pool water level would be up a bit more for vac-to-waste again, but nope, lost that much. :( Assuming water will have to be clean before I can get someone out to see how much repair will be. Have high doubts that I'm going to be able to fix the leaks myself. Just hoping I can keep water high enough for continued skimmer operation at night, but do have the alt sucker just in case.

Raining again now...

Did you mention already? Does your pool drain down to the same level and then stop there? And if so where? Just below the skimmer? At the level of the returns? That'd be a clue to where your leak is. (Sorry if I missed that you already know where the leak is.)

I'd mentioned a couple of days ago that I apparently had a leak 'cause it had rained a couple of inches (as measured from an pre-rain empty bucket) but the pool water level hadn't changed. Have had a couple of cracks for over a decade, but they didn't seem to leak. Now water levels out after filling above skimmer, but about an inch lower than is needed for skimmer to operate. :( So most likely it's one or both of those cracks.

@jimmythegreek, @bdavis466, what would you suggest as a timeline for a pro fix? After water is cleaned? Anything that I can try as a temp fix for now? Tried JB Weld water stuff a number of years ago, but didn't pre-sand, so didn't adhere. Cracks (shorter then) were present before we had the pool resurfaced years ago. They were supposedly patched, but reappearred a few months later. Didn't seem to leak, so we ignored them.

If the water level stops dropping below your skimmer but above your returns, then that does point to the cracks and not your plumbing. Hopefully one of the guys will know the fix. I wonder if you're going to need to drop the water for the repair, and if that would affect your SLAM strategy (the order in which you're doing things).

The water completely covers the skimmer basket by an inch and stays there. That's why I'm not suspecting plumbing leaks. I'm hoping that the repair can be made from the deck level so that a minimum amount of water has to be drained.

I'd like to get the pool completely clear before calling the pros 'cause it's been several years since the bottom & walls have been seen and there might be gel bubbles or something that would need another resurface instead of just a couple of fiberglass crack repairs.

Only got up to 63° today with rain - winterish to me. 🥶 Decided not to fool with filter. Shallow end cleaned up real nice & could just barely make out vac head today. Then I made a mess by scooping the rest. Very few leaves there, so may try to vac-to-waste a little over there too tomorrow after adding some water. It's a comin'...:)

Having trouble with getting the Quad DE filter to not leak at the band bolt connection and band joint. Have put tons of Magic Lube II on o-ring and cleaned fiberglass tracks well. Tightening until springs touch and tap around with mallet per manual.

First time I tried, didn't have a couple of pieces of the filter in and tightened so much that bolt bent slightly because the ring could still be spun around the tank. :( There basically are no install instructions for the parts in the manual - found where they went from youtube cleaning video. Don't see any damage to tank, o-ring or band from that faux pas.

@JoyfulNoise, any ideas?
