Hello. I need your help

I carefully tested and here’s my result.
1. The CYA is 50.
2. The TA is between 220 and 250 depending. At 22 drops the liquid I was dropping in started to turn red but disappears after a swirl. At 24 drops it’s all slightly red tinged and at 25 it’s definitely red.
3. FC = 3ppm
4. CC = .5
5. TC = 3.5
6. I also ran the tests using the small blue box and it looked like chlorine and pH were as high as the scale goes: 5 and 8.2.
Sounds like you have the hang of it!! Good job tackling your water! It can be intimidating at first, no doubt. You took the bull by the horns and got it done! Folks here are a great resource, stick with the advice here and before long you will be helping others....that's what makes TFP awesome!!

Hello and Welcome to TFP!!

Do I reply to my own post or pick a person who replied to me and reply to that? This time I’m replying to myself to see how that works.
since you have quite a bit of background information, it is best to continue this thread , just as you did, for these issues until you pool is clear.

I appreciate everyone’s help and have made a donation to support TFP. You’ve been so nice and helpful.

Thank you, thank YOU for your support!!

It’s slightly cloudy. Not green.
Since you started with a cloudy pool, you should follow the SLAM Process. This is how we kill algae and make the pool crystal clear. No need for an OCLT yet since the pool is cloudy. You have already met the criteria to start the SLAM process. Follow it exactly and don’t cut any corners.
Bring pH down to 7.2. Wait 15 mins and then dose chlorine to SLAM level.

DK, I may have missed it, but someone should have mentioned to stop using the chlorine tablets. Turn off the feeder or take the tablets out of it, as the tabs add CYA in addition to chlorine. Your CYA is kindof at the limit at 50, and it mostly never leaves the pool other than when you drain water.

That’s why I had to drain it! I’d dumped a bunch of stabilizer in there and raised the CYA to off the charts. ... back before I knew about this site. I think I am on the right track now with the help of you all.

Delta, all of this may seem overwhelming right in light of everything you've been through, but stay close to us and use proper testing as recommend above and we'll make pool care much easier for you. If you have any questions about the equipment or water testing, please let us know. Have a nice weekend.
I can’t figure out the pool math app. I can run the tests but don’t know what to do based on the results. I’ve drained the water down to 12 inches and refilled but it’s still cloudy and green tinged. I’m so disappointed not being able to get this right. Here are today’s results. Any suggestions? I run the pump constantly and clean the filter 1-2 times a day. Still cloudy and greenish... not as green as it was but not clear either.
cya 40
FC 15.5
CC .5
TA 200
pH 7.8

I use the PoolMath page at PoolMath - Trouble Free Pool. I'm not sure if it's easier than the app, but I find it easy. I've heard that slams sometimes take time, so keep at it. Don't get discouraged!

Delta, please post a pic of your water. That may help us. Since you drained nearly all the water and now it seems green, I'm concerned about iron. Are you on a well there?
No I have city water. When the pool place ran test the iron was zero. I don’t know maybe it’s the hot humid weather or I was making mistakes. I think I understand the SLAM now so maybe it’ll just take time. Tomorrow I’ll vacuum and take a picture. Thanks you.

We will get your water clear and balanced in no time. Test results look ok.

Sounds good. Also, during the SLAM, you only need to test the FC mostly right now. No need to test all the others. If you do a LOT of backwashing, maybe the CYA once a week during the SLAM. Once the water is clear, then you can worry about the CC test. For now, save your reagents, focus on the FC test, and all the routine stuff like brushing and inspecting everything. Leave no nook & crank untouched.

I have a thought. Maybe it's already been asked and answered and I missed it, but you said you got the pool 6 years ago and that you've been cleaning the filter 1-2x a day. Is the filter cartridge 6 years old? They should be replaced every 3 to 5 years. Have you gotten a new one?(two would be better, one to use while you correct the problem, and the second to change to so you start with a clean filter in a clean pool). Also clean the filter cartridge housing and the chlorine feeder housing. They could both be lined with slime from running without chlorine/algaecide, etc..
