Good Evening,

I would love to start by thanking everyone who has taken the time to contribute and share their lessons learned. There is so much useful information on this site. This community has inspired me to take this project on.

Here is a little background; My family and I moved into this home a few years ago, like most we started tackling the little projects mainly inside the home. We have finally arrived to the moment of truth! we can no longer ignore this huge problem "See images". This property had a pool built back in the 1970's, after some quick research i found out it was filled in 1983.

We decided to redo the pool. We have had a few builders come out talk discuss a few options talk ruff numbers, none of them have actually return a quote/estimate in writing. Due to having no luck with pool builders I expanded my search and found the community of DIY/OB's. Im now ready to take action, but I'm sure i will need the communities help along the way. I have seen a few post from members over the last few years build in my area. Looking forward to hearing from you all and getting feed back on local sub's.

Let the journey begin!

Here is what i have done so far.

1. Contacted the city to get instructions/requirements for the build - (while talking build Dep. i found out the previous pool was demo'd with a permit so should be a fresh build on the paperwork side) Note: note sure what the pool Demo' code regs would have been in the 1980's. not to concerned new build will mostly be new part of the yard.

Next,
I'm currently looking for a designer/engineer. If anyone has any recommendations please PM me. Also please please share average cost of services, i understand its regional but any northern california members would be great!

Hotub: N/A
Depth 3'6 - 8
Size: 16 x 33 (open to suggestions)
Features: Benches, cabo shelf, etc ( open to ideas)

Wow... your pool looks amazing. That must have been fun project. My initial thought was just simple design with a 12'' back wall for change of levels. I have recently been looking at projects with faux rocks scapes, grottos, swim up bars.

I am really interested in your contact, by any chance do you have a recommendation for design/ engineer plans?
 
So after spending hours digging around this enormous library of knowledge and advise. Im thinking of maybe approaching my project a little different. Im wondering if i can rehab / dig up this pool. So here are my questions and pictures. Top of pool appears to be in decent shape compared to some of the amazing rehabs in this community. One wall/ top of wall missing (depth unknown)

known pool info-
Built :1970
Filled 1983 - with permit (filling methods unknown)

Questions
1. Can wall be rebuild/ modified for cabo shelf/ beach entry
2. structure integrity
3. issues or concerns based on pictures

Finally. What do you guys think of the this estimate; ( pictures with red scribbles)
1. remove and discard trees 2. remove and discard all concrete 3. dig out pool. 4. level and grade back yard
$5700.00

Please let me know what you guys think

As you probably know several people have written about filled-in or buried pools including the one below which is currently ongoing. @michmela44 Any pointers/advice?

Welcome to TFP. This will be your go-to site. But I don't know what "OB" means. Can you explain? Thanks and I'm eager to watch your progress.

That is the amount i was quoted to perform that work... Your comment makes me believe that's a good deal?

Also any recommendation's of pool designers/engineers for plans/permits?

I really don't know if it is a good deal or not. What we suggest is to get at least 3 (try for 5 if possible) quotes to make sure you are getting the best bang for the buck in YOUR area. Prices are SO different even from one side of town another.

I don't have any contacts for that kind of thing in your area :( I can help you pick some pretty tile and plaster though!
 
I probably don't have much to add except be very careful pulling those trees out. Depending on how deep the roots are and how close to the wall, etc, it could do some damage. Especially if there's already a crack that the root worked its way through, you don't want it pulling your wall in.

Prices vary a lot. I was told by one company $15,000 to dig out and haul off the dirt and got it done by another for around ~2k. Add in trees and concrete, etc and that's gonna take the price up. It also depends on what you find at the bottom. Pure fill dirt is cheaper to dispose of than junk dirt that has to go to a landfill, so if you uncover any kind of junk like mine had, 2 or 3 truck loads might have to go to a landfill and maybe get charged more.

Your coping also seems to be in decent shape. If you plan on trying to save that, be aware that a machine that can reach into the bottom of an 8 ft pool is likely to weigh between 10k-15k lbs. Even the mini excavators are easily 6k-8k. If the machine needs to get across, it may be worth trying to remove an access path.

Its been a few weeks and managed to find some time to work on the project.

1. Working with a pool designer - looks like its going to be a rehab/remodel. Looking to make a few structural changes (adding spa, and 2 baja shelf-

2. Got most of the trees taken down

Yeah, it is a little concerning, 12ft is the furthest distance from rear fence line which has the powerlines over head. The single line across the pool is just tv cable. Undecided if we are going to do a power panel upgrade and run power under ground on the left side of property i will post pictures soon
