We recently had a tree fall onto the pool. The damage to the wall is approximately 4' wide, along the top 1/3 of the wall.

Pretty sure I could straighten the wall, replace the sextionnof top rail and the one upright, however is that safe to do? Am I looking at a full replacement pool instead?

I would think it should be okay. Just use care and a couple of extra sets of hands to work on it. Gently push against each other and walk it out. Now if there is a permanent crease you might have rust worries down the road.

Thanks. Im in the process of draining it so I can pull the liner now. I pulled off all of the top rails and plates and had a look behind the liner in a few spots (its half drained) and quite frankly I'm amazed at how clean and rust free it looks in the spots I've checked given its age. Must have used good steel and a solid coating. However my return was leaking and thee is some rust there, so if I repair this pool I'll have to put a patch there at a minimum, but the rust dowsnt extend far from the actual return so wall still seems strong. who knows though, once its fully drained I may find the bottom edge is rusted or something.

I half heartedly started working on the damaged section with a block of wood and a rubber mallet, just to get an idea of whether it would go back into shape easily. It will go back to shape, but there are some creases that likely will not come out fully. I could always add some stainless sheet metal there to strengthen it.

I just wish this Honda pump I borrowed would pump even at 50% of its claimedGPM. Its taking quite a while to drain it down. I was hoping to be able to drain it, pull the liner and make a decision on it today and if it was a no go finish tearing it down, but its not looking likely for today. I'll be lucky to have it fully drained by dark.

The pool had a good run, but ultimately we decided to scrap it and start fresh. Shopping for it's replacement now. Was seriously considering an Aquasport 52, but was convinced against that one and now the current leaders are the Lomart Whispering Winds 2 Same as what I had), or a Premier Aluminum Coliseum.

I have to get moving though....new pool deck construction scheduled to start mid June!

What was the deciding factor to replace it?

The hard work is DONE-ground prep!

It was a few things, but the main thing was the fact that I really couldn't get the creases out. I couldn't make it look much better then the pic I added earlier. The main crease also had a small hole/tear in the wall. Between the patching, replacement parts, the liner it was all adding up, and I realized although in my gut I think it would have been fine other than the cosmetic factor, I would be thinking about it structural when the kids and their friends are all in there.

I liked the Coliseum I looked at tonight, and my wife really liked it, so that is probably going to be the one we get. I really loved the Monument, but it's expensive and pretty much overkill for our needs, but man is it a nice looking pool.

My wife did want to bump the size of the replacement from 21' up to 24'. I said no way initially, but now I might cave in. I was planning to do the install, but the place I went tonight has an installer I liked (he does installs on his own as well and is highly regarded), and their price is reasonable. I also need some grading done around my yard, so once they have their skid steer in my backyard, I'm planning to try and offer them a few bucks extra to fix some of those issues...which were also fallout from the downed trees. Kind of a kill two birds one stone thing. Otherwise I will have to do the grading with a shovel a wheelbarrow and a big roller, so this could be a win win for me :)

I think a 24' will look a bit too big for our space, but I have three kids of my own, and our house tends to become a hub for their neighborhood friends, so a little extra swimming room would be nice.

I started out not really caring much about any of this project other than getting it all together for my wife and kids, because I just don't have the time to use the pool like the rest of my gang, but now I'm actually getting pretty darn excited about it myself!

I hear you! Safety first!!! Good job Dad!!!

Your kids and their friends are really going to like the bigger size!

NICE on finding someone to do the pool work AND yard work. You can be sure they will jump on the chance to earn extra money doing the yard work so you don't have to do it with the wheelbarrow and shovel!!! SCORE!!!

24' is a nice sized pool it feels pretty big when you are in it. I really like the aluminum frame of my pool and I've seen other people in my area with the same model pool installed by the same company that even after 15 years still look brand new.

If you go aluminum make sure the deck you are having built does not touch the pool if it is pressure treated lumber. The modern pressure treated lumber will basically dissolve any aluminum that touches it.

If you can go bigger, do it. You won't regret it.

Thanks guys! I've agreed to the 24', just waiting for my town to confirm the zoning for me.

Thanks, I hadn't even thought about the aluminum pool with PT lumber, which is pretty dopey of me because I knew the aluminum balisturs I want to use for the railings have standoffs for mounting to PT for just that reason.

Still on the fence between a traditional style pool or the slat walled style. Both all aluminum.

Finally got the replacement pool installed the end of last week...woohoo. I trenched for and hooked up the bonding loop over the weekend, inspection for that is tomorrow, then I can do some grading and add some landscape stone. construction on the new deck to begin Wed. Nothing Fancy, just a rectangular platform to the pool edge with stairs coming down on the existing deck. SHould be quite functional.

Only negative so far is I don't like how much I can feel the bolts on the wall seam through the liner. I can feel the endge of some tape, but the way I can feel the bolts makes me think they may have only laid one layer of duct tape. I'm going to talk to the installers about it, in case it poses a problem, and hope it doesn't. Otherwise the pool is nice and level and the kids are enjoying it.

I got a cortisone shot in my shoulder only 36 hours before I was supposed to dig the trench for the bonding wire, so I cheated and rented a small trencher from home depot. Man did that make the job easy. Overkill for sure, but for $65, and the ability to keep my shoulder from getting sore, well worth it to me.

Good job on the machine rental! SO much better than ruining your shoulder! Money over pain for sure!!!

I don't know how much tape they used on my pool over the bolts. Guessing they did but really don't know for sure.....hummmmmmmmmm well if it was going to be a problem I would think it would have shown it's self by now.

That really looks nice there. Can't wait to see the deck! Get or rent a nail gun!! You will LOVE it and thank me for it!

Thanks! I hope your right about the liner.

As for the deck, I wimped out and hired it out......but to a contractor who was one of my childhood friends. I get a "bro deal" so it works out well, because I don't make a great carpenter. It will take him a week, but would take me all summer working on weekends. Hoping to get it done quick so my wife and kids can enjoy it for most of the summer. Nothing Like getting up for work and seeing the rest of the family getting ready for a day sitting poolside :)

LOL I am the one getting ready for a day poolside while my hubby goes to work. One of the joys of being a teacher!

GOOD job on getting the "bro deal"....Let him do what he does and hand him some $$ and a steak dinner pool side! That is using your brain!

Thanks! My wife is a teacher too, finishing her last day today, then it's poolside for her an the kids for a couple months!

That is so neat. I also did my student teaching in the school I work in. I have never been on a job interview LOL After my student teaching they called me and asked if I wanted to teach Kdg (same grade as I student taught in). Said come down and fill out the paperwork and I have been there every since! I am not teaching kids of kids as in I taught the current kid's parents! I tend to teach whole families! Small, rural county that strives to do what is best for the kids and it shows in our "school grades".

I am sure her and I could swap some kids and parent stories! LOL
