Hi Charlie, I used petroleum jelly. I put a thick bead over the gasket and tightened the motor nut. So far it has stopped the leak.

Pump has started to leak again. I called Polygroup and a Tech advised putting petroleum jelly on the gasket to make it seal better. He also said I could use silicone grease. If that does not work, he stated it might be a warped motor nut. He stated if it still leaks, he would open a warranty...

I went ahead and removed the motor nut, made sure the gasket was in the correct place and tightened the motor nut. I plan to put the skimmer/pump back on the pool and hope it works.

Thanks much for the advice. I've seen the compactors used in videos and had planned on using one. We have such hard pack clay here that I expect the compactor to take more of a beating than the soil.
