Waxahachie, TX Owner Build - A race to beat the baby!

There aren't many great ways to make a 90 joint with staggared 1" tiles. They should just cut the sheet so the tiles line up evenly with each other. Just in case they need direction attached is a picture you can provide!!!

Yes, that would be worlds better! They were probably trying to maintain the offset look, but it's not worth it at the expense of an ugly corner.

Thanks for sharing the picture. That makes it pretty clear.

It looks to me like they could keep the offset by notching out one of the top row tiles and then they would fit together at the corner like puzzle pieces. At least that's how it looks in your pictures...

Good news... I got a call that they are going to be out tomorrow morning at 7:30 am to finish the job and fix everything I need fixed. One of the bosses will be here to walk the pool with me and discuss all my issues. So it sounds like they are going to make it all right. I just hope they don't expect me to pay for the tile that will have to be removed!

And that boys and girls is how you make a pretty square edge of tile! Any questions? Well then get to work please!"

NO way you should have to pay for the tile THEY messed up. I would LOVE to hear what their boss had to say to them when he saw the pictures! Did the REALLY think that would "pass"????? So sad, too bad. Their loss!

Okay so a question to anyone who might know???? Can they reuse the tile? Should they even try? This is a real question as I have never tiled nor do intend to but I LOVE to learn so it is time to teach the teacher please.

I'm not sure if they can reuse the good tile... I'm just expecting some of it to break or get messed up and I wouldn't want to reuse those, of course.

I didn't actually talk to the owner who called and said they would be by tomorrow. He left a voicemail, and I decided not to bring up the details when I called him back to confirm that I got the message. It would be interesting to know if this is par for the course for their tile guy, or if the owners agreed with me it was bad. I just want it to look good, so agree or not, I'm glad they want to make me happy! :)

Well, the guys showed up bright and early as I had been told and they were very attentive to my concerns with the tile. They took out the tile on the steps and redid it, fixed the poorly curved section on my bench, and did a really good job getting it right on the rest of my benches.

Here is a picture of the improved steps:

This is a picture of a section of a three-tiered bench I have in the deep end that they did this morning. I'm very happy with it:

So, all's well that ends well, as they say! Thanks to everyone for helping me see how they could make this right. Now I'm just waiting on plaster and we'll be done!

I'm curious what there excuse was for the subpar first attempt.

They never volunteered an excuse and I didn't press the issue. This company is doing my plaster too (different division) and I wanted to remain on good terms with them, especially since they were so unquestioningly responsive to my complaints in the first place.

I could honestly see it as the company wanting to get the pool prep'd for plaster and sending someone in on a weekend. I'm sure the guy doing it (sent to work on the weekend) was not all that happy about it and there was no one there to give guidance. So I'm sure he was just like, " I want to get out of here ASAP".

Sloppy work on the installers part and a dumb decision by the foreman to send a guy in on a Sunday of all days when no one is home. So they have absolutely no excuse whatsoever.

What a relief for you. That looks great, Jamie :) Smart move just saying how it needs to be, and letting them handle their internal woes! Did the original tiles come up OK, or was it new ones?

Yes, it was a relief! They used a hammer and chisel to take up the tile together with the base of cement it was on, and didn't even try to salvage anything. I don't know if I'll be able to get the tiles off without damage, but I collected what was there in case my kids want to try their hand at some sort off craft project. I also got a decent amount of good tiles that had been cut from the sheets but not used, so I'm trying to think of a creative way to take advantage of them.

Yeah, Greg and I have a saying here, be right, not dead right. :)
Haha! Exactly!

When I was a kid, we would have used them somehow to make ashtrays. We made ashtrays out of all sorts of stuff and mum and dad pretended to love them. I suppose that might be different nowadays, haha.

Jamie,

I've read through your experience here (all 34 pages!). I can't wait to see the final pictures. Also, I'm very impressed by you doing all of this pregnant and homeschooling. I toy with making the question of "do I homeschool?" every year at this time so I'm always curious to hear of others doing it and how they do it. I can only get all of this pool stuff done during my baby's afternoon nap and my others are in school so I don't know how you do it. Good luck with the rest of it!
