My user name says it all!

I know draining to solve problems is frowned upon and almost never necessary, but I think at some point if you're spending a few hundred on chemicals to try to clean it up I'd rather just drain the thing, clean it out a bit, and refill with new water and spend the same or less on startup chems.

Might be a bit cheaper, probably less aggravating, and especially if your CH is high you may get a fresh start on that too out of the bargain. YMMV of course.

Wife just texted me and said pool is more teal than green this afternoon!!

Not the ultimate, I know, but possibly better than just blindly guessing - Wal Mart has an HTH 6-way test kit that measures CYA for $22.83.

good deal! that should get me through the weekend lol

If I had known I was going to have all of the trouble I had so far, I would have drained it. I have replaced 50% or more anyway due to vac to waste

I have been reading and reading, but honestly don't understand it all. I hope to understand more clearly soon.
Don't try to understand all of it at once, I beat my head on the wall when I first converted.

Then I just accepted the fact that it works, still not sure why. This first season is the hardest, but it get way easy as you go.

I literally do nothing! A daily check of chlorine and Ph and weekly tests from the Tf-100. I now love going to the pool store to buy muratic acid and nothing more. post more pictures for us and you!

Show your wife my SLAM thread. My husband was against it at first too. Just keep following what we tell you and do not listen to the pool store

Also my daughter has been in the pool every day since I finished my slam even before levels drifted down and she is fine.

I just wish I knew now how much bleach to use. I firmly believe (seeing the difference since yesterday) that if I had my kit right now, or knew what I need to maintain shock level I would be swimming by next weekend. The pics don't do it justice. Still cloudy, but the color is dramatically better right now. The stabilizer dropped 10 points since Wednesday's test, and the chlorine is 10 points higher.

Trying to send POP (Pool Owner Patience) on over to your wife!!

I see a huge difference in that color! It's not nuke green anymore! That is a big change. I think when your kit comes you're gonna move quickly.

Please try not to worry about what the pool store is saying. We really won't have you tear anything up. That is exactly why we're not advising you to try to SLAM without the kit. We are extra safe when it comes to that. With the green eating your chlorine you really don't have to worry about bleaching anything out by adding the amount that jblizzle recommended ^^^ up there. You'll be in a holding pattern without risking damage by trying to blindly add massive amounts of chlorine.

Here's hoping for extra quick shipping! :)

That is funny that the pool store thinks as little of us as we do of them

Mine did when I went in there to buy LC last year. The guy that I dealt with (that I liked) that never "pool stored" me retired. I found the site when his replacement had my wife buy the phosphate remover twice in 2 months to clear a cloudy pool. Keep at it OP, you are making progress and as soon a s your kit gets there it will start to make sense.

When I first got my Taylor kit I was overwhelmed but you will pick it up quickly.

Thanks all. jbizzle, I found it funny too. Funny how bleach and baking soda did more in 2 days than the pool store chems did in 12. Just got finished with vac and brush. Waiting for a safe water level so I can disconnect the hose from the skimmer. Lost the vac head in the swamp. I took it off of the pole so I could brush. I know I know "stupid noob". To be safe, I'm putting about 1/2 gallon in when I turn it back on. I will use my cheapo test kit tomorrow to see what it says. Mainly have to do everything else to prep for princess' party

Be glad you did not drain the whole pool. You could have ruined the liner.

This will go quickly once your kit is here and you can start.

Good morning! Love the color change because I know the direction it means you're heading! I also think it means your filter is chugging away nicely helping get some of the iron out. When your slam is done and you're not losing chlorine overnight I will be happy to assist you on that front.

In the mean time, I'm confident you'd be fine/safe (eg not bleaching your liner) if you added a jug of bleach in a.m. Then another again at night to maintain because while store tests aren't accurate they rarely come up with high cya when there isn't any (usually their tests underreport when near 100) so I'm pretty sure you have high cya which means a higher shock/slam value than where you're at.

A gallon in your pool of 8.25% bleach at 25k gallon pool will get you about 3.4 ppm of FC. So adding that much day and night is a very conservative coast for a few days. (That from the pool calculator.)

One thing you might consider while you wait is a partial water change, eg. 30% to help get your cya lower so that you can use less bleach when you slam. I highly doubt you'd get it too low given the range of cya readings from the store ;) ...and it might speed up your progress too/make it easier when you finish up with a slam. Just be sure to leave a foot or so in the shallow end and for that matter add water at the same time to prevent any floating liner issues. Dilution is the key for high cya. (I realize you have the party. I mean post-party if you're of a mind to keep moving on it.)

If you haven't already, take a peek at the CYA/FC levels link in my signature and you'll see the difference in the chlorine levels required to sanitize between optimal and high cya levels.

I'm so happy you're turning the corner on this...the summer ahead is going to be the best birthday present your daughter could get ;)

Iw was thinking with me vac'ing to waste using roughly 8" out of the pool each time is helping lower cya. Am I incorrect with thinking this way?? I hope with this method, by the time the kit arrives, I will be down to 40 or 50 cya. I will check your sig next time I'm not using tapatalk. So you think 1 gal am, and one pm?
