New Pool Construction Project in Houston: 2nd Time is a Charm

It was another most excellent day. The landscaping crew arrived and worked some magic.

They showed up

They dug holes

They laid sod. And nearly dumped a large palm into my brand new sparkly water! (j/k)

Yesterday was pool and mud. Today was grass and ambiance.

That's very impressive stuff right there. We had no wash down or acid wash of any kind. I think I found a few wrappers and pair of jeans or something floating in our water after they filled up. As soon as the plaster company stepped outta there with their special shoes, they threw in the water hoses and took off.

Top notch PB you have there....show off.

Thanks, Twolabs, for the comic relief today. I've read this one a few times and I want to laugh out loud.

My PB came very highly recommended. He has owned his own shop (design, build, service, repair) for about 40 years, and is keen to maintain the fine reputation he has established over that time. He doesn't do anything overtly "hi tech" (e.g. he doesn't like VS pumps and LED lights are a mystery), but he does focus on quality and continued customer satisfaction. Even though my build isn't quite yet finished, I'm so pleased with the whole experience that I highly recommend using him.

Sigh....so you have sod and trees already? Now you really are just showing off. You need to tell the guys, "Hey...uh...not today, that's too quick. I'm becoming unpopular on TFP." I'm sure they'll understand.

I'd be wary of a hitman coming from the Sanger, TX area. I think you've built your pool and had it landscaped in the amount of time their PB painted a couple of posts....

Ok, Twolabs....just so you know that's it not all happiness and sunshine on the Bauman project:

On Monday, the PB hooked up all final electricals and turned on pumps. The equipment is setup to automatically shut off at 4:00pm.

On Tuesday, the equipment ran as intended and shut off at 4:00. By 4:05, the water level in my raised spa had dropped 18" and I noticed lots of expensive water running out of my drain pipe into the storm sewer! This happened immediately after my landscaping and tree guys finished up for the day. Aaaagggg!!!

I was hoping it was as simple as junk in one of the check valves. I talked to my PB (who had seen the tree guys digging and manhandling the trees) and he said "I'm sure one of those tree guys broke a pipe when they were digging holes today". Now I'm thinking Aaaagggguuuuulllllppppppp$$$$$$$

Then he said "Just kidding. I'm sure it's just some loose pebbles in the check valve. This frequently happens soon after the Pebble goes in." Yesterday, the plumbers emptied about a pound of little rocks from the 4 check valves. This morning, the spa was right at the level it is supposed to be.

No harm, no foul. And I think my heart attack has subsided by now.

Hahahaha!! PB has a sense of humor. I like that. :)

So funny. My brain might have started in that direction....but then came back :). As an alternative, I can offer sending some subs - that would probably be a far worse thing. Since Jay (and Eva and you) are in the second round of pool builds that started well after mine that are wrapping up - it will be interesting to see how many of these third round pool builds finish - which I have already seen some! I am glad it was a simple fix Jay - your build still can stay in the good PB / build category - Karen.

Love the palms! Are they Silvester palms? We ate getting those too!

I don't know what a Silvester palm is. The large ones in the back are silver date palms. The large one on the side is a Chinese fan palm. The smaller ones are Mediterranean (date?) palms. When choosing them, I told my landscaper that I wanted trees that look tropical but can still handle the occasional cold snap that comes through Houston every few years. So none of my selection are truly tropical, they look close enough for us to get the effect we were looking for.

I still have 2 open landscaping areas in the middle of my pool decking. I originally wanted sago palms, but my landscaper keeps telling me no. They're poisonous to kids and pets, and they are sharp enough to cut you up pretty good if you run into them when rounding the sidewalk. I'm still on the fence. Right now, we have 2 empty dirt holes that we need to do something with. I'll probably fill them with seasonal color things and kick the can down the road on ultimate decision.

How do they do that? I have not looked at them closely, do they come apart?

Both my pools have had the same type. If you have the same kind that I do, it's quite simple to clean them. The valve body is rectangular with a clear window on one side (top) to see if it is functioning correctly. To clean them, you remove 4 screws (or however many there are), take off the clear window, and clean all junk from around the flapper. Before reassembly, check to make sure the lid gasket is in the correct place and screw it all back together. I seem to remember the whole process taking about 5 minutes when I had done this previously.

Sure. Send 'em on down. Just be sure to let them know that they'll likely have to "say hello to my little friend". Or maybe all 12 (gages) of them. This is Texas, afterall.

On second though, tell your time-taking, wood-staining, concrete-breaking bush league crews to stay the heck away! I've only got minor repairs left....I don't want them to teach any of their bad habits to my PB and subs. :)
