If you are on the #TeamRunHot roster, Post up "why?" Even if you are not on the Team, but want to join, post up your "I got surprised by high FC demand" story!

#TeamRunHot - Our team maintains FC at the top of the range for our CYA, or above.

I make the recommendation to run at the high end of the FC range for your CYA (Always follow this Link-->FC/CYA Levels) NOT some arbitrary FC number or range. Use the tool!

I also tell people, that if you have to dose higher (liquid chlorine) so that you are in range (and at top of the range) when you test, then dose higher. I tend to run 1-2 FC above range...Today #TeamRunHot won:

Oak Catkins everywhere (should have taken pictures). I could not keep up, even netting every two hours. Dolphin worked overtime. Changed skimmer socks 3 times. So much detritus from the catkins, water got a little hazy from all the little pollen particles that the catkins contain (The hazy looked just like it looks riiiight as algae is about to bloom, clear but hazy. Kinda like a public pool. LOL) 5 people swimming for 2 hours. FC loss in 6 hours was 5.5 ppm, and this was with CYA of 80! I have seen 5.5FC demand in June/July with full sun and swimmers, but not in May.

This is the pollen that gets released from catkins when they fall.

I can, even in June/July, turn up the chlorinator to 50-60% when I pull the solar cover, and turn it back down when the cover goes back on and have it maintain FC...so that is what I did. Started at 12 (Top of FC range +1), added 1.6 during the time pool was open, and ended up at 8, a loss of 5.5 (Logs below). Now, imagine I had my FC at 6. Add 1.6 (SWG), with that demand, I would have ended up at 2.5, when min for CYA of 80 is 4.

Extraordinary event. Sure. Really necessary to run top of range or higher? No. But I'm on #TeamRunHot for this exact reason.

Has been interesting to see the continued fallout from this event.
FC was 8 on Friday. Added 7.5 FC over 24 hours, ended up at 10.5 FC, for net FC demand of 5. (Cloudy and solar cover on)
FC was 10.5 on Saturday. Added 7.5 FC over 24 hours, ended up at 15 FC, for net FC demand of 3. (Cloudy and solar cover on)
Normal for me this time of year is FC demand of 2.

I joined the team by accident in 2012. I didn't understand much of anything when my SWG ran hot the first week, but HOLY COW I had the clearest water anyone had ever seen.

So week after week I just kept the FC up there. As time went on, I watched friend after friend go cloudy and/or green at every high FC loss event such as big storms, parties or heat waves. The pool store would cringe and tell me how I needed to lower it like everyone else and i'd smile and promise I would and waltz out giggling to myself. No way I was joining #teamsuckyyucky.

Everyone would compliment my lack of chlorine and I thought it was the salt pool that made the difference because it wasn't wide spread yet. It turns out i had enough chlorine when everybody thought I had none, and they had too little which made all the nasty chlorine smells/irritations in their non salt pools.

Now that i understand how it all fits together, I just use it to be lazy. I tested 14 FC today and thats a 3 or 4 day reserve with no SWG production. I turned the cell down and it will take a week or more to hit 10 FC, still allowing plenty of wiggle room for any curveballs.

I am #teamrunhot simply due to the fact that I am also #teamnoSLAM. I do not want the hassle of having to SLAM and so for me it makes sense to just stay at or above the high target of the FC range. I have set up so that I can be the laziest pool owner ever and so far that is working out well. I usually run 8-10ppm of FC, only because I like to test my pH and don't have a digital meter.

I fully subscribe to the logic of #teamrunhot. But do have a question - how do we test pH when above 10?
I don't worry about it much, as I keep my TA around 60, so it tends to be good anyway. But it would be nice to know once in a while.

1) mine usually reads fine with 4 drops

2) i'd test on the brightest day of the week in the afternoon for the best chance of being a hair under 10.

3) if that proved difficult I would shut the cell off for a day or 3 and get my Ph test before resuming 10+

Of course there is something here about that! Thank you!
I had pondered using thiosulfate. I have a big jug of it in powder form from back in the bad old days. But rather than try to mix my own, next time I need dog food from the pet store, will pick up some chlorine eliminator from the fish aisle.

Y’all are amateurs when it comes to lazy.

You want to beat me at lazy, you are going to have to buy 5 robots!!!!

You have to spend more time tending to your fleet. While they keep you from messing with the pool, they still take time away from being totally lazy.

At 7/70 I used to be in team run hot but nowdays that’s team conservative. :( Back then the target was 5/70. 7/70 is my target but in reality most of the time I’m probably >7/60. I’ve been a bit busy lately and haven’t been actively testing and turning my SWG down, I suspect I’m probably somewhere around 15/50 at the moment so for now, I’m running hot. I tend to let it run hot for a month at the end of the season. Reagents are expensive and hard to find so I generally stop testing at 10ppm and simply call it >10ppm.
