Inconsistent prime, bubbles in return, and 0 filter pressure

So I purchased a home with a neglected pool that I have been determined to revive. Once i had new electric run to the equipment pad everything was up and running well and I began clearing debris and following SLAM protocol. The equipment all appears fairly old and the plumbing is set up quite poorly with a combination of hoses, pvc and flex pvc. Ill attatch photos of the monstrosity.

However, at some point my pump started pushing/pulling water in an inconsistent manner, never appearing to fully prime or fully filling the pump basket. I have large bubbles in my return jet and the filter PSI rises to about 5 psi before dropping to 0.

I cant recall when exactly this happened, but i am thinking it was after I had started blindly vacuuming the deepend to waste. Problems exist regardless of multiport setting-filter/backwash/recirculate

I am wondering if the way the flex pvc and hoses are routed on the suction side are allowing for an air lock as the appear to travel up and down before reaching the pump that sits below the pool level.

So far I have tried too identify air leaks at the fittings on the suction side with soapy water, shaving cream, smoke, and running water with no smoking gun. I have also tried using a drain bladder to force and partial clogs in the suction line back towards the skimmer again with no obvious resolution. I inspected lid and lid gasket and relubed the gasket. What do I do next? start trenching to look for underground leaks? No obvious water loss has been observed but i haven't done a full bucket test.

Welcome to TFP.

Let's start with some basics before you begin ripping your pool apart.

You more likley have a clogged pump impeller or a dirty filter.

Turn off the pump breaker and then reach into the pump and feel for any debris in the impeller. An impeller can get clogged with seeds to where you need to demate the motor to examine the impeller.

What is your filter PSI?

Does you PSI gauge go to 0 when your pump is off?

Do you have your own test kit?

Yes I purchased tf100 kit and filter psi rises to about 5 psi before dropping to zero. Yes pressure is at zero when pump is off. I will look at the impeller again in a few minutes. How will I determine if filter is the issue? I haven’t looked into the sand filter yet…

If that is while the pump is running then it points to a pump problem.

What is the pump doing when PSI is 0?

What do you see looking forn into the pump lid?

If filter PSI is over 20 then filter can be clogged.

Looking into pump lid I see water flowing in but not filling pot entirely. Seems to be flowing in in surges opposed to continuous flow

No weir door lol
Where is the water level relative to the skimmer mouth?

Look into the skimmer with the pump running and see if the skimmer basket stays full of water.

Show us pictures of what you are seeing.

Water is almost to the top of skimmer. Yes it stays full of water. You can see some flow if there’s debris present but otherwise it doesn’t appear to have much suction. If you put your hand in you can feel it but again nothing crazy

You don’t feel a lot at the skimmer.

Things point back to a pump impeller problem.

I checked impeller again and didn’t find any debris and it appeared to rotate freely
