Why do builders steer builds away from SWCG setups?

It seems there is a greater profit to be made from steering TOWARDS salt cells in my eyes but time and time again I hear from friends/co-workers who build that the builder mentioned the standard 'corrosion' and other issues that are bound to happen with salt water pools. Is it just a lack of knowledge or is it something else? I was very lucky that my builder pointed me towards SWCG system but he was in the minority.

Profit on reoccurring weekly/monthly service is much higher than a little money gained for one time sale of salt system.

U,

I think initially many pool builders got stung with SWCG systems.. They were sold as 'magic' and that you never had to do anything and the pool would be perfect.. They were told that a 20K cell would work in a 20K pool. They were told you only need to run the pump for 8 hours a day, etc... etc...

Then, when things did not work like magic, the SWCG system got all the blame and not the pool owners.. We see this today.. "My cell is bad, because it won't make chlorine".. It is almost never a bad SWCG, and it is almost always poor understanding by the pool owner of how a SWCG system works, and what routine things they need to do to make things work correctly..

Once a myth starts, it just gets worse and worse as time goes on..

Sigh!!

To add to @Jimrahbe ‘s post, builders also don’t want the warranty headache associated with new pools and their owners calling the builder saying the cell isn’t working. Warranty work on a new pool is a total money loss for them. Since the SWG and lack of knowledge will result in a lot of initial warranty calls, it’s just a headache that they don’t want. So they say the systems are bad or corrosive or whatever and steer customers towards other things (like Ozone) that they don’t have to deal with.

It is on the same logic that pucks can be used to maintain a pool. I can see many potential pool owners being scared off if they were explained the importance of maintaining the chemical balance and trying to explain to them what it takes. or not liking the idea that need to pay someone to do it. It's daunting at first but it's actually pretty easy once you figure out you pools needs. I can see possible issues with salt cell getting scaled up with new pool openers.

If you are like many/most people on this site (looking for information to educate yourself, more of take on a challenge yourself than pay someone to deal with it, problem solvers) it seems like a no brainer and obvious. But there are a lot of people out there that don't know how to use a screwdriver or want to know how to use it.
