I’m cleaning my pool pump filter for the first time and forgot the original position of the valve.

Where should 'Close' be pointing when cleaning the filter, and where should I set it when running the filter again?

Hey mastahpee and Welcome !!!

We need to see the rest of the plumbing to know what that valve does, and/or which way the water flows.

As is its 100% open. Turn the handle all the way either left or right and it closes that side (achieving the same thing).

Its pretty much a T that can block the flow, or let it by.

Thank you for the responses!

Attached the photo with the whole picture.

So as it is currently is, I can run the pool pump? If I have to clean the filter, turn in 90 degrees either way and start cleaning?

I think I had it turned when I cleaned it but water was coming out of the filter out so I kind of started to panic and closed it off. Is that normal?

Cheers!

Good to go according to the top pic in the 1st post.

The valve should be turned to clean the pump basket and thats what you do.

Backwashing is to clean the sand/DE filter.

Are we still having a terminology mixup ?

If you were emptying the pump basket, the valve stops flow from the pool. (Assuming because the equipment is lower than the water level). The water in the pipe above the pump will drain back through the pump when you open the pump lid. It should stop pretty quickly.

I see, makes sense, it is probably the excess water.. I will give it another go.

I am very new to this, really appreciate the help!!!!
