High water level in winter

Hey all. This is my third year owning a vinyl inground pool. When i just checked the water level under my safety cover (solid). I noticed it’s all ice and level is about 2 inches below the liner track (aluminum coping). Should I be worried about this? When the top layer of pool turns to ice, does this raise the level? Will the level drop back down on thaw?

Anyone with a liner pool experience this in winter? My cover is not mesh so I manually pump off water from the cover. Not sure how much the level was drained when they closed my pool ether. I use a pool company for closing. I do have a gizmo and one of those plastic covers that cover the entire skimmer front opening. Guess I’m worried about water and ice getting to and destroying the coping or liner.

Never realized how much anxiety owning a pool would cause smh.

Water expands when it freezes...about 9% in volume (not much).

Nothing you really can do about it now.

In general, you want to lower your water below your skimmers when you close and use a gizmo and/or noodles, and/or a milk jug with some sand in the skimmer to protect the skimmer from the expanding freezing water.

During winter you will get rain and snow (that will melt) and will slowly raise the water level. I prefer to monitor it and, when it is warm enough and thawed, use a sump pump to lower the water level and maintain it below the skimmer in the winter.

Don't try to lower the water level when the pool is frozen...the ice will drop and can ruin a liner. Let it thaw, then lower the water level.

Typically with an intact proper fitting solid cover, water collection over the winter is minimal if at all. Any cuts, holes or ill fitting areas of the cover around the deck? Is it taught to the deck surface? I’d suspect the company that closed your pool removed very little water if any, but my guess is as good as yours. Skimmer cover plate or not I prefer to drop the water level below the skimmers as previously recommended. Monitor the water level as suggested and drain some off as you feel necessary when it thaws.
