Brand New Pentair Heater Not Working

Hi All,

Replaced my 400BTU Mastertemp propane heater with a new one today. The old one was (very) old and kept giving me E05 E06 codes...I finally decided to replace it.

Has a pool guy install it. Same brand, same model. After it was wired up etc - it gives a code AFS - which is weird because the old one didnt give that code.

He's saying the guage on the propane tank is off and there really isn't 50lbs in there, OR the regulator is bad - it just seems to coincidental to me given all that's happened here.

Has anyone has this happen? Anything I can check myself? I'm pretty handy but I'm stumped - would there be something he overlooked that would trip an AFS code?

Thanks in advance!

henry

Not sure about the AFS code, but there's an internal gas flow valve which is shipped closed. You should open the heater and check that valve is open.

thank you - any idea how to do that?

Check this ON/OFF slide switch on the gas valve....

Most likely, the power supply is 120 but the voltage selector plug is 240, which is how the heater comes from the factory.

Note: Do NOT change the plug just to see if it works.

If you have 240 volts supply and a 120 volt plug, you will seriously damage the heater.

Do you have a multimeter and know how to check continuity?

Check the air flow switch is open when the heater is off.

Gently blow into the AFS hose and see if it closes when it gets air pressure.

Check that the hose to the AFS is properly connected.

Did you heater ever run?

Something could have come loose during shipping.

I don’t know how to check continuity.

How would I check to see if the afs is open when the heater is off?

Blow into the hose while the heater is on or off?

The heater never ran. It was brand new out of the box and didn’t fire up because of this AFS issue

Does the blower begin running?

Lot's of different things can cause the AFS error. Have you read the Wiki?

I honestly don’t know. I wasn’t home and the tech explained all this through the phone.

I just thought it was weird he blamed the gauge on the tank and /or regulator on the line when the old heater didn’t have an AFS issue and ran (but kept eating stack flue sensors)

I’m going to attack it tomorrow

I think we are playing the game of "telephone" here.

A gas problem would throw an Ignition error.

The Wiki explains the sequence of operation of the heater. It is also explained in the Installation manual.

First hand observations are needed.

Observe the start-up sequence and what the heater does until it throws the error.

I have a new Pentair 400k propane heater that was installed a few months ago. Gas wasn't connected when the electrician hooked it up so I didn't run it at the time. Just tried to start it and have the same error. I'll check the power connections/settings and let you know what I find.

Here is the video of startup --

gives me AFS error on startup then goes away - blower is on, you hear a click and you can tell it starts ignition (i smell the exhaust and feel heat from exhaust)

then stops ignition but blower still on - hope the video is ok
