Hi y'all,

New to the group here. I have a question for everyone. We live in SWFL and have an inground gunite 11,729 gallon pool with no water features and a Betta solar powered skimmer. The PH is always high almost every single day and we are constantly adding muriatic acid to lower it. Is this normal or is there a way to regulate this better? We use the Taylor K-2006 test kit and mostly liquid chlorine as our sanitizer with the occasional Trichlor tablet for CYA. We also use PoolRX in our pump basket. I'll post our test results from yesterday below. Thank you in advance for any advice.

If those results can from the Taylor kit the TA number doesn’t look right. Your High TA is causing the pH to rise faster than needed.

Also, the poolRX thing has copper in it and will stain your pool when the levels get high enough. Best to get that thing out.

Sorry, TA is 90. What should we let the TA drop to? We use an app which calculates this based on our CYA level which gave us an adjusted TA reading of 72.5. We've let it drop to 60 before figuring in CYA and the PH was still high.

Good to know about the PoolRX and I think we've already got staining unfortunately (light mint green). It was recommended to battle mustard algae. We'll get it out ASAP! Any advice on how to get the staining out?

The adjusted TA thing isn’t very helpful as it seems to mostly be a way for pool stores to get you to buy overpriced baking soda to raise the TA they “adjusted” to be lower than it should. Then when the pH starts rising too fast because of the high TA, they sell you fancy acid that drops the pH (and TA along with it). And the cycle continues. We only care about the actual TA measured by the Taylor drop test kits. In that case the TA is ok down to about 50ppm which seems to stabilize the pH fairly well as long as you are not using trichlor tablets to chlorinate.

The staining (assuming it’s copper), JacksMagic makes a stain ID kit along with a treatment depending on what it is. Once that’s done you drain the contaminated water out and refill with fresh water.
