Hey all. I have learned much from reading various articles and posts on TFP and have formulated a plan (see below) to remove the iron staining (tested with Vitamin-C rub) from my pool. Does this look solid?
OBJECTIVE: To remove as much of the metals in my pool as possible, with the understanding that I can't get ALL the metal out because I dare not drain ALL the water from my vinyl liner pool (because doing so would risk extreme damage & cost to the vinyl liner)
PLAN:
- Add the appropriate amount of ascorbic acid to the pool, let it circulate satisfactorily and also scrub liner with a brush.
- Use sequestrant to hold the metal in suspension (that is only IF a sequestrant is truly needed for the short time the water will be in the pool)
- Drain water directly from vacuum positioned at the bottom of deep end. I believe I read that when trying to remove metals from your pool, you should suck the water from the lowest section of the pool.
- Drain the water, but only a "safe" amount that doesn't put the liner in jeopardy. My thought was do drain the water down to slightly above the bottom of the shallow-end.
- Refill the pool with water (after having the town test my water to ensure it is metal-free)
I would then like to repeat this entire process a few times. This way, I am “halving” the amount of metal in the water each time and eventually will get to a place where the metal amount doesn’t stain the pool as noticeably.
QUESTIONS:
- Does my idea of draining the water down to almost the bottom of the shallow end seem safe in protecting the vinyl liner from potential damage? Or would you suggest a different level to drain to?
- How many times do you suggest I repeat the entire process of draining/filling (approx. ½ the pool volume each time) to get a a point where the amount of metal remaining in the water has been so diluted that it doesn’t stain the pool too noticeably?
- Is using a sequestrant like Jack’s Magic The Pink Stuff (which is expensive) really required? Because I plan to immediately start draining the water once the ascorbic acid well circulated and staining has lifted.
Thank you my friends for reading this and for your thoughts and advice!
Info: Pool is Vinyl liner. 26,730 gallons. 18’ x 36’.
Below is an image of the pool's dimensions (as best as I could measure). The bottom-most image illustrates the pool's depth. And the shallow end has approx. 37" of water (but I forgot to write it down).
