We are in the process of purchasing a new pool (our first). It is an 18' Carvin pool, we have decided to go with a SWG, as well. I have been lurking here for a few weeks now and the information on this site made me feel comfortable in purchasing a pool. My biggest concern is that we will be filling from our well, which we know has a high iron content as we have a Culligan Water Softener and Iron Cleer system.

After reading on here I have ordered a Pentek 10" 1 micron filter and Blue Filter Housing that I plan to run the well water through as the pool is filling. I thought about also using the end of hose filler cartridge the pool company recommended, as well. Overkill? Additional thoughts?

If I still have iron issues, I plan to use the bucket method to help get any that makes it through the initial fill. I would like to be ahead of the game, if possible.

Thank in advance for reading and any tips/tricks that is passed along.

You've come to the right place! For all your iron-filtering needs - I would forego any filtering directly from the hose. If you have actual iron coming from your water, you won't be able to filter it until it interacts with the chlorine in your pool. It's a great thought, but won't work in delivery. The chlorine oxides the iron turning it into physical rust (which you'll be able to SEE and FEEL in your water).

I suggest getting your Poly-filled bucket rigged up while you fill - this helps offset any of the labor post-fill (go ahead - ask me how I know). Give me a few - and I'll attach some photos of the Version 3.0 of my bucket 💪

My pool went from black/brown through the assorted Arnold Palmer yellow, murky green, dark teal to TFP CLEAR in about a week after rigging my bucket up. Sadly, I've been coined the "Rust Master"

Pool came with an extra nozzle for the filter. So I used that in addition to basic plumbing for my return to connect to the base.

I recommend getting a screw-tight lid. I’ve been neck deep in rusty water fishing poly-fill out of my pool at 10 PM too many times. So I learned the hard way!

Correct - so while you're filling - run your return water through the bucket to filter out the iron as you're filling.

Do you have a place you rig your bucket near you return hose? I used my pool ladder... let me find a pic of that too!

I use my ladder, and balance the bucket on a couple bricks, strapped down with rope or a ratchet strap. Run the return through the bottom spigot, and filtered water comes out the holes in the lid.

I will caution you - drain the bucket before you backfill/rinse. Drain the bucket before you take it down. I ended up tapping the bucket a second time to help with the draining.

For your bucket:
  • 5 Gallon Bucket
  • Screw Top Lid and Adapter (don't bother with the snap-on lids - they don't last - they get warped, and you'll just be angry)
  • 3-4 cheap pillows - you'll have to trade out the fill when it gets nasty
If you happen to know what your tubes for the return look like or dimensions... you might see about getting some plumbing to assist with holding your return line in place.

Drill enough holes in the lid to keep the water flowing evenly without pressure building on your filtration tank

For yourself:
  • A sense of humor
  • Maybe a name for your bucket - mine was lovingly coined Joe Dirt... then Joey Dirty... then JD3.0
  • A beverage or 12...

Thanks! Not sure on the tubes as of yet. Guess I will not know until Wednesday. There is model set up of the exact pool we bought in the store, so I could check it out again.

My wife loves the movie Joe Dirt, so the name could stick.

Ok. I want to be sure on the correct steps for opening my pool.
Pool is currently filling. Not as dark due to iron as I expected. Expect it to be full tomorrow.
  1. Once full, turn on pump & start circulation
  2. Water test for iron
  3. Deal with iron
  4. Add Bags of Salt to bring up salinity
  5. Test Water for Chlorine, PH, etc..
  6. Adjust per tests
Does this seem correct?

Thank you!

Sure, but water level looks low. Can you take a wider picture and include the skimmer so we can see water level?
