Is it ok to reduce from a 12” run of 2” PVC to 1.5” right at the pump inlet union? I have read that a straight run of pipe is recommended anytime a reducer is used, but I’ve also read that this may not be an issue with a pool pump due to the strainer basket. What’s recommended when connecting 2” PVC to a pump with a 1.5” inlet?

Not a problem. Or run the 2" as close as you can then reduce it to the 1.5."
To provide more details about this, 2” PVC will come down from a Jandy valve and enter a 2” 90 sweep. The sweep will connect to a 2x2x1” TEE (for for water bonding), and then the run of PVC will go to the 1.5” inlet at the pump. I could put the 2” to 1.5” reducer right after the TEE and run 1.5” for 12” to the pump if that’d be better than placing the reducer at the inlet of the pump?
Won't make a lot of difference either way, and if this is a VSP, not at all as the lower water speeds make everything work better.

Why not just bush down the outlet side of the T to 1.5”? Cleaner install aesthetically than another fitting downstream IMO.
Aside from the difference of a bushing vs reducer, that’s what I was wondering.
Since I’ve got 2” pipe everywhere else, does dropping down to 1.5” for 12” after the TEE have equal or better flow when compared to maintaining 2” PVC after the TEE for 12” to a 2”-1.5” reducer at the pump union?
