So I have a Hayward Tri-Star 1.85 HP VS pump model SP3202VSPND. My pool quote said I was to have the Tristar 900 VSP 1.85 HP pump. Anyone know if what I was supposed to have and have are the same pump? When I looked up the Tristar 900, it had a model number of SP3200VSP.

2nd issue, I currently run my pump 8 hours per day. From 2am-6am on Medium (75% power) and then from 10am-2pm on High (100%). When winter super off peak discounts end in May, I will probably run my pump for consecutive hours. Is running my pump for non consecutive hours okay? I know some people run their pump 24/7. With my electricity plan , I don’t want to run my pump from 4p-7pm weekdays due to peak pricing.

My pump seems loud in general, but especially on the high setting….it seems super loud. I can hear the loud humming all the way at the front of my driveway and even across the street from there.

At one of my patient’s homes yesterday I went outside and listened to his pump noise at 2 different times at different speeds and it was super quiet (he had a pentair inteliflo3HP pump)

Are Hayward VS pumps just loud pumps? The product literature says it is a “quiet” pump.

Any ideas why my pump is so loud? Any suggestions on how to run my pump? I have a suction side cleaner, that currently runs whenever the pump is going as long as it is connected to side port. The pool company says they recommend leaving it connected all the time but that I can remove it when I am swimming. What do other people who have suction side cleaners do with theirs? The pool company instructions say if I do remove the suction cleaner that when I reattach that I fill the hoses with water to get all of the air out. Do I just submerse the hose in water to do that?

Someone suggested I get an actuator for my cleaner since i have an automation system so I can turn off the side suction when not needing to clean. Not sure how many hours per day I should have my vacuum going around cleaning. If I got the actuator, would I have the pool builder who put in my pool install that? Is it very costly to install?

What pump RPM is your medium and high speed running?

Why do you think you need to run your pump at high speed?

What automation system and model cleaner do you have?

Max speed of a pool pump is 3450 RPM. There are few reasons you need to run a pool at more then around 2400 RPM.

You would have been able to run your pump at quieter speeds for the same flow if you had got a 3HP pump instead of the 1.85HP pump.

Pictures of the pump and the labels on the pump?

The SP3202VSPND is discontinued.

The ND means No Display.

Red,

You should run your pump at specific speed and time for a reason, not just because...

As an example.. For skimming, or for SWCG chlorine production, or for a water feature, etc..

Why do you run your pump at the speeds and times you do now??

The whole point of having a VS pump is to run it as slow as you can to save on the electrical bills.

Running a VS pump at full speed is every bit as loud, or maybe even louder, than a single speed pump.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Tell us more about your pool and pool equipment by completing your signature.
Since the present pump doesn't have a display, I'm guessing you have some type of automation.
Include that in your signature as well.
Include info on pool, pool equipmemt (including manufacturers and model numbers) and test kit info.

If this were my pool and the contract stated the 900 was to be installed, I'd require them to install what I contracted and paid for - unless they were providing a verifiable upgrade (like the 950) for no charge.
What was installed is not the 900. Don't let the PB try to convince you what they installed is the same or better than what you paid for. What was jnstalled is old discontinued stock.

I have a 950 installed that runs 24/7 (SRP - no time of day plan) and it costs me less than $20/month to run the pump.
20 hours per day at 1200 rpm for skimming and to satisfy the SWG flow switch and 4 hojrs per day at 2900 rpm for the IFCS to clean the pool.

I am only running my pump the way it is because the pool builder startup person recommended . She said to run for 8 hours per day. 4 on high and 4 on medium. As for the times. She had set it up to run at night but since it is so loud I put the high time during the late morning/early afternoon when my electricity is cheapest.

I can’t see where it says the rpms Of those speeds. And pool company won’t seem to help me. They said I should get a qualified pool service when I asked questions about the pump. There doesn’t seem to be a separate screen that shows the rpms on the pump itself. The Omni PL just shows the 3 speeds and lists them as high (100%), medium (75%) and low (50%).

I regret not getting the 3hp pump, but it is what it is right now and this is what I have. When this pump dies, I will get the 3HP pump.

I won’t have the SWCG on for another 1-3 weeks.

My cleaner is an aquanaut 250 suction side cleaner. no heater at the moment. I do have a waterfall but do not turn it on much.

I guess I need recommendations for pump run times and speeds since the pool builder didn’t seem to furnish me with very good information.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Here is a link to what the pump sounds like running .

You need to read thru the pump manual (and automation manual) so you know how to set it all up.
The pump can show percent of total rpms or actual rpms. This can be change with a setting.

100% = 3,450 RPM (78 GPM).
75% = 2588 RPM (58 GPM).
50% = 1,725 RPM (39 GPM).

You probably never need more than about 1,725 RPM, which is 50% Speed.

If I run on 50%, for how long do you suggest I run it? Do I ever need to run it at higher amounts for my suction side cleaner than the 50%?

I would run at about 1,500 RPM 24/7 as long as it does what you want it to do.

1,500 RPM/3,450 RPM = 44% Speed.

Probably not.

Turn it down as much as possible.

As long as the cleaner works, it should be fine.

So what is the difference between what was actually installed and what was in my quote? I think the pool company is going to probably push back on this pump issue. I read reviews for the 900 and it seemed like a good pump (although I wish I had gotten the 3HP one). I am not sure what this one they put in is or how it differs .

1,500 RPM should use about 140 watts and produce about 35 GPM.

What is your electricity rate?

Well I just changed my plan due to my solar panels, the new plan starting next month will be at these rates for those times below. So I don’t want to be running my pool pump ever beteeen 4pm-7pm.

Ok, at 150 watts and $0.2978, the cost is about $0.04467 per hour or about $0.13401 for the 3 hour period from 4 to 7.

For 30 days, that is $4.02, so not a big deal either way.

The other 21 hours will cost 0.15 x $0.10789 = $0.0161835 per hour or $0.3398535 for 21 hours or $10.1956 per month.

The total cost to run 24/7 for a month at 1,500 RPM will be 10.20 + $4.02 = $14.22.
