When the pool person back washes, it floods the pump room. It used to have a short piece of backwash hose to the drain which is pretty much right under the outlet (about 6-8 inches above). A few years back, they actually cut a hole in the brick wall to allow it to run out of pump room but its pretty messy. If my memory is correct (may not be) it wasn't always this way (lived across from pump room for 35+ years). Pool person said backwash hose won't help. Does this sound normal? Also can the amount of water released during back wash be controlled or is it just on and off?

Got a picture? Can’t really control backwash pressure unless you can lower the pressure of the pump. But you can certainly run a hose from the backwash valve to a drain or even into the yard to water the grass

Is that drain clogged up? Seems like a short hose would be worth a try.

That little drain hole in the floor is inadequate for the volume of water a pool pump can discharge.

That drain is probably clogged up (and it’s too small to handle the discharge). It’s not the pool service guy’s job … whoever owns the property and the pool needs to hire a plumber to fix it.
I have mentioned to BOD I think drain could be clogged as it is not covered and 35 years old but they are slow to respond. I did pour a gallon of water down it the other day and it went right in. Thanks a lot.

A gallon of water may go down the drain without much issue. But the drain is inadequate to handle 60 gpm or more during a backwash. And it's unlikely the drain can even handle the flow from the downspout as well.
