In the last months, I've complained about how hot it is in Houston, and having to travel to West TX (Midland/Odessa) for work where it's typically hotter and dusty.

So now? Being sent to work in Iraq for a month. o_O

I travel all over. It's hot in a lot of places. It just a different type of hot. We all joke about AZ vs TX or wherever, but in the end it's either dry and hot or wet and hot. They both have their pros and cons... Or cons and no pros... Whatever.

I am in flight back From the Fort Lauderdale area to Austin. Yesterday they were "complaining" about it being 90 and humid. The heat index was 101. Let that sink in. I bet there are a lot of us would be grateful to have 101 for a heat index OR actual temp.

To be fair though, Midland/Odessa is a whole different type of weather. Wait until your car gets rammed by tumbleweed coming out of nowhere.

Midland/Odessa ALWAYS finds new and interesting ways to mess up my plans. I've been stranded there more times than I care to count. Once, I thought I'd be smart and fly in/out of Lubbock instead (and get to see the Buddy Holly museum) but got stranded there, too.

I haven't been attacked by a tumbleweed (yet), but I have had a car door blow back on my hand in the 80 mph "normal" winds.

For Iraq? I'll get my first ride in an armored Humvee. So I got that going for me.

Hopefully you are getting great compensation! Is it at least tax free?
I'll be getting Expat pay, which for that country is 160% of my normal salary. Not sure about the tax ramifications- I'm getting royally hosed this year, regardless thanks to inheritance taxes.

I'll also get some extra vacation days out of it. Have a cruise scheduled in late October and looks like I'll probably have off the week prior to that, which will be nice.

Leaving on Friday evening... The project I'm going to step into is devolving at an alarming rate, and I won't even be able to cope with my usual evening martini.

I keep thinking about the extra $$, days off between deployments, and the airline mileage boost...... It's all I've got to look forward to at this point. LOL
