My first SLAM

Thanks. I purchased it through them but for some reason I can't get to my order history on their site. Should be okay though.

The titanium plate isn't covered under the two year warranty, of course. I'll order a new one and see what happens. I don't have a choice to wait until end of year clearance sales this time.

In the grand scheme of things those are pretty reasonably priced for the service they provide. Up until recently they are all i have used for the past 10 years. Most have lasted me a few years. When my last one died the replacement cell was outrageously priced so I didn’t order one. I have my units in the shed & may order one if the price is right.

While I'm here...is there a way to check CYA when it's overcast (I'm under the impression I need bright sun to read the dot)? I wold like to get that sorted ASAP.

You're supposed to do it with the sun to your back anyway, so overcast should be fine.
Now that you mention it, I see where you're coming from. But I believe it still needs the daylight to scatter/obscure the dot properly, hence why we recommend to not do it under an awning or in the evening. It's such a subjective test you need every last detail going in your favor.

Let's get a ruling from @mknauss

So things have been running smoothly since I found the hidden monster algae and eradicated it. Now I move on to thoughts of closing and how to best do it so I don't have the same issue next spring. I realize most of it was due to leaving the leaves in the pool once it got warmer and not starting my filter soon enough. I'm not ready quite yet, but plan to SLAM level before removing the pump and lowering the water level. Here's to hoping I'm not ignorant two years in a row! :ROFLMAO:

I’m baaaaaack! Working on a SLAM because I was suddenly getting low chlorine readings. Pool is clear as can be, CC is .5, but I can’t pass a OCLT. I was down 2.5 this morning. I add the amount of chlorine pool math suggests but I never get to the suggested FC level. Should I keep adding until I reach 31? I usually test 45 minutes after adding.

Edited to add that I completely forgot to lower my pH before slamming. Should I do that and start over?

I tried to continue my post from last year but TFP said my old thread was archived and that I should start a new one, so here it is.

Looks like I may have actually passed this morning. I was 23 at 11:34 late last night and 21.5 this morning at 7. I wonder if I tested too late last night or didn't give the chlorine enough time to mix in at half an hour?

Your liquid chlorine may be degraded. Check the date codes & do a confirmation test 30 minutes after adding from the suspected low potency batch so you can adjust dosage accordingly going forward.
If your ph was mid 7’s upon beginning keep going - if not let fc fall to 10ppm & test/adjust ph to 7.2.
Have you ever deep cleaned the sand after dealing with the last algae monster?
If not you may wanna try that.
Check & scrub your ladder/steps inside & out.

In the future- before increasing cya do an oclt so if something is brewing you can slam at a lower cya/fc level.

Welcome BACK !!!

How close are you getting ? Is the chlorine new with recent date codes ?

It's possible that the .5 that failed you came after the sun was up. It's why you really have to test it dark on both ends because cutting corners may make it continue when it didn't need to.

Also, you don't have to wait until bed (?) on the night side. Test at dark and then you can go to bed a bit earlier to make up for getting up a but earlier.

30 Mins should be fine.

Hard to know a date code on my chlorine. It's a carboy from the pool store. They tell me it's fresh, but is it really?

My last pH recorded before the slam was in the 8s. I pretty much live there it seems.

Yes, I deep cleaned the sand filter last year after the algae issue.

I realize now I did my additions in a way that made things more difficult, but live and learn. lol One of these days I might learn how to make things easier on myself. Thanks!

I'm getting to 22, 23. I just can't figure out why it's so far off from what the app says I need after adding what it tells me to add. Could the high pH be the problem?

The fail was 2.5, but if I really did pass this morning I was also a bit late. I will try it again today/tonight.

I didn't wait that late on purpose...just worked out that way last night and I wondered if it mattered much. Looks like it doesn't as long as it's dark?

Should be fresh but if they fill them & leave them outside in the sun ☀️ it may be degraded some.
Just use more & forge ahead!
After dealing with ph….
You definitely want the oclt to be all in the dark for accuracy.
What about the ladder/steps? Those are suspect #1 👀
