First time pool startup

I assume the chlorine kills algae at lower levels as we typically keep the pool at 5 ppm and not 16?
Who keeps it at 5 ? People who get algae blooms do. The reccomeded targets are just that. Recommended. They (or poolmath) don't know your daily loss at that point in the season. You need to think it out and plan ahead. You need min, plus the recent daily UV loss, plus some wiggle room.

Ideally you dose over target, and when you lose today's FC, fall back into target range so that you remain free and clear above minimum until tomorrow's test/add.

But yes. Anything above min kills algae and/or makes it sanitary. When it got bad enough to SLAM, you need min, plus the days loss, plus whatever is spent killing algae. The SLAM levels have been optimized for maximum algae killing to speed the process along. You'll get it all at, say, an 8 FC, it will just take considerably longer.

Got it! So me keeping it at slam levels, makes it a bit quicker to clear up

Yeah. It was tweaked for maximum efficiency VS chlorine used. Anything lower takes longer. Anything higher donates too much to the sun gods. Your mission is to remain as close as reasonably possibly throughout. Sleep is for the weak. :ROFLMAO:

Well it hasn’t been cheap - but STILL cheaper then the $500 the pool company charges to open my pool and dump 10 gallons of chlorine with algeacide and then never to be seen again haha

So a clarifier will not help the cloudy mess in the pool? I read the thread here about clarifiers, but it seemed a little open ended.

Resist using clarifier. Have you tried adding DE to your filter:

I have not. I can get some on Amazon. The $45 price tag just stopped me from buying it tbh bc I’m cheap haha. Also the delivery date isn’t for another week. Although I can prob find some DE at a local shop

Is the only hazard of swimming in cloudy water the whole hitting your head while diving bc you can’t see the bottom? Or is there any chemical issues to swimming.
That, and if someone is on the bottom, rescuer may not be able to find you. Remember...Gotta see to save.
