Howdy!
So I have kept my current 18 foot AGP for the last 2 years with the cheap Intex sand filter and well, its a constant struggle. I live in the Mojave desert and the sand storms and blow sand are killing me. Its always windy here. I'm willing to put in the work, but this filter is just killing me. It works good once the pool is clean, and you keep up on the pool. but if you get behind, its just a huge struggle.
I started doing my own research on better pumps but its so overwhelming. I don't want to reinvent the wheel when so many of you people have already done this.
I have taken out about an INCH of sand/dirt/mica out of the bottom of my pool this year. The cover blew off partly and let so much dirt in! I have been Pumping to waste. The suction struggles so bad with the hand vacuum.
My pump:
INTEX 26643EG SX1500 - Pump flow Rate: 1500 GPH. System flow Rate: 1, 050 GPH
When I am using my accessories like my: Intex 28005E ZX300 Deluxe Automatic Pool Cleaner
It slows down in about 30mins. I back wash the sand filter but 30m later its so slow. Not using any clarifier.

Id like to upgrade to a better pump, larger filter, more poweerrrr! Eventually hard pipe it.

I have a budget of around $500 for the pump/filter.

What are you doing when this pool reaches its end of life ? Replacing it with the new model, going larger, or going traditional above ground ? Or are you moving in the next few years and only need something for now ?

Buy the equipment for you next pool as it will likely outlive this one if you're staying put.

I'd search the offer up app and FB marketplace. I sold my large sand filter and 1.5 (?) HP pump for $100 and there's many deals to be found. I checked for someone the other day and a whole Hayward setup for a traditional above ground was $250 local to them on the app. If you could limp along to the end of the season, it all gets fire saled because nobody wants to store it for the winter if they don't need it.

I 100% second this. Bought an Intex in 2015, got a new filter and pump in 2018, upgraded to a hard sided pool in 2020, and am using the 2018 purchases.

You might be inclined to go for the 1HP but I can tell you I did and I ended up replacing it with a 3/4HP for energy savings.

You probably want to do the AGP skimmer and return mod for this with an SP1091LX.

While most included intex filters & pumps are generally underwhelming so upgrading is recommended, understand that maintaining a clear pool is mostly about chemistry.
Before throwing your pump out with the pool water ensure that you’re not dealing with an algae problem by doing an
Overnight Chlorine Loss Test.
You can buy the biggest baddest pump & filter but they alone cannot eliminate/combat algae.
The SLAM Process & subsequent proper
FC/CYA Levels maintenance
do that.

With out a doubt, we arnt combating algae yet, the inches of mud on the bottom and underwhelming suction is what I suffer with. Pumping to waste.

So as an update:
Someone local was selling a brand new Xtreampowerus Filter system. Its way bigger then I was expecting. Its 1.5hp 120v RS4g24213L The sand filter is comically large, a D-500 its marked. No other details. The issue I see is the hoses it uses are very large. I dont think its 2" but its over 1.5. Can anyone help me get some information so I can get connectors/hoses and such?

There’s no 1 3/4” so its either
1 1/4”
1 1/2”

For adaptation to your intex you can either go with standard above ground pool hoses & change your returns to standard ones & your intake to a standard skimmer or use these adapters to connect your intex connections to standard hoses

The second link works amazing! I hate how it restricts the flow, but the pump has internal threads AND external threads that look like 2.25" or 2.5". I have also started to hard pipe it but I would like to remove the bottle neck of the passthroughs. Its 2" pipe but the holes in the wall are only 1.25"
So dual 1.25" into the intex plunger valve that's 1.5" over to the intake of the pool filter. The rest of it, is hard piped to the stock 1.5" return that also narrows so it can have pressure.

Any recommendations? Would also like to add a solar heater.

1 1/2” pipe is plenty sufficient some people here have made their own adapters as well.
