New Pool Startup - Chemistry

Dose with poolmath from *8.2* to 7.6.

Yes. New plaster has a healthy MA appetite for 6-12 months.
I dosed yesterday from 8.2 to 7.6 and it didn’t budge. I did that again today. I will test this afternoon again. Fingers crossed

Do it again yesterday. And again yesterday until it was a 7. Then you stand a chance budging it with one dose today. :)

Always reset it back to 'in range' or else tomorrow will still be yesterday's high, plus more high from today.

Ohhhhh i was thinking MA would not be a daily adj like CL is but more of a steady thing once you got it into range.

Light bulb clicked on now… no wonder Lowe’s sold it in 2 gallon packs…

A new plaster pool requires daily pH monitoring for a while while the plaster continues to cure.

You will eventually see the pH rise slow down and then you can start moving to every other day pH checks and maybe twice a week eventually.

Ok so dosed it again and finally got pH down to 7.8. I will check it again tomorrow.

Regarding chlorine - i added enough today per pool math to get it to 8 but the powder test calculates 3.5 now. If i use the comparator dye block the yellow color suggests 5-10. Am i correct that the powder test is more accurate? If so pool math is saying i need to add two quarts of bleach to get to FC = 8. Not sure which one to go with.,,,

Last, should i just reset my expectations to add chlorine every day in a Houston climate? Even in colder weather?

Great!

Always the powder test.

Don't try and read values off the comparator dye block. Just use it to tell you if you have any chlorine or not.

Add liquid chlorine and retest in 30 minutes to confirm the FC level achieved.

Add chlorine daily as necessary based on your testing. You will learn when you can begin skipping a day.

Thank you so much

Thank you so much
Ok so this morning FC was 2 and pH was 8.3 so added 3 cups bleach and 1 cup acid per pool math.

Fc was then 6.5 and pH 7.9 so added another cup of bleach to target 7.5. 3 hours later the FC was 5.0.

I’m confused with the FC fluctuating so rapidly - I am using the powder test for all of it. My mistake for not testing right after I added the bleach the second time but would the FC fluctuate that much?

Do you have any CYA in the pool water? Can you post a full set of test results -- or Share your Poolmath data?

It would if something was brewing. Algae grows exponentially and the last few growth cycles are the difference between a clear pool with algae, and a swamp.

Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

If you remove the sun/UV from the equation and lose FC overnight, it's time to
SLAM Process

Hi sorry

I have been testing FC and pH every day but have not retested the others since last Thur.

  • Pool temp: 64
  • TA: 70
  • CYA: 60-70
  • CH: 180

Either testing error, unknown liquid chlorine concentration, or algae. Do the OCLT.

I have been using 7.5% bleach from the store but will get a new jug today. I am not confident in this one’s date even though i just bought it.

For testing i am doing water then powder, swirl, then count drops and swirl after each. The powder does not entirely dissolve but the instructions said not to worry about that. I have not been waiting more than a few seconds between powder and test drops either. Would that throw it off?

I will do the OCLT!

A Taylor smart stir is the best $40(ish) you can spend on your pool. It not only does most of the 'work' for you but it makes the results consistent as well.
