Broken piece in skimmer system

Under my skimmer float valve, there is supposed to be an O-ring that fits in the body of the skimmer system, within a groove in the plastic. It appears the small plastic part that keeps the O-ring in place has broken, and now the O-ring refuses to stay in place. I'm sure this is affecting the float valve's suction. Anyone have a solution to fix this or thoughts on this? I tried to show a photo of what it looks like. I thought about getting a new O-ring and gluing it to the float valve.

After a while, most of those skimmers lose the O ring and there are no problems. Its only an issue if the water gets too low.
