First post here. Have been reading all the great advice, tips, tricks etc and decided to ask the professionals. Woke up to a large amount of sand in front of 3 out of 4 jets. We have since had filter and multiport valve repaired. Wondering if I can just vacuum all that sand on filter mode. One of the pool guys said yes, it will settle back into the sand filter. But everything I'm reading on internet says vacuum to waste. Either way it has to run through the pump, which is my concern. Will doing this cause any damage to pump? Thanks in advance!

Put it back into the filter. A small amount won't damage the pump. If more comes out, need to re-visit the valve repair or may have a broken lateral.

Thanks! We emptied the filter and laterals are perfect. The air relief tube was not connected, so that's been corrected. The multiport valve was replaced as well. We backwashed and rinsed and now the filter is running with no sand blowing back. Just for clarification, what is a small amount of sand? There is, I would guesstimate about a bag...in 3 different places. I've brushed it around so it's not so piled anymore and vacuumed a bit this morning, but got nervous.

A bag? Fifty pounds dry? That's a lot. The danger is that some could get caught between the impeller and diffuser and jam the pump if you try to get it all at once. It will also be abrasive as the impeller ejects it into the outlet pipe. Don't do it all at once, a little at a time, so as not to have major issues. Doing it this way should minimize, if not eliminate any issues. Some dirt that suction cleaners (Pool Vac, KreepKrawley, etc.) pick up is abrasive so take it slow and don't worry. The sand won't affect your water chemistry.
You may end up with a lot of sand in the pump pot after a bit. Just rinse it out through the drain port and be sure to clean the port, lube the O ring on the plug, fill the pot with water when done.

Just to follow up. I brushed all the sand into one corner in the shallow end. then my husband used our big yellow bucket dust pan and scooped it all up. Have some stragglers, but I know the robot will pick up most, then I can vacuum whatever is left. Thanks again so much!
