Hello! We are putting in a 13x32 free form pool. First question - PB suggested a 7'x13' baja shelf - is that enough room for 2 adults to hang out or would you go smaller with the pool being on the smaller side? 2nd question - wanting to do Harbor Blue plaster color, but thinking a lighter color for the baja shelf - can you do 2 different colors of plaster in the pool? thanks!

You need to ask your Pool Builder or plaster contractor if they have the equipment to do two colors. It will take separate mixers and tools to keep the colors separate. Don’t be surprised if they charge you for it. It will be more work for them.

Get some rope and lay it out to the size and shape your shelf will be. What do you want to do on the shelf? If you want to lay out on chair/loungers then you need to get a towel or such to make the size/shape of the chair/lounger inside the rope shelf and see what you think.
How deep are you going to make the shelf? Make sure you and the PB are taking about WATER depth which is from the bottom to the middle of the skimmer opening. Some PB use the measurement from the bottom to just under the coping. You lose several inches of water depth when they do that.
You can get two different colors if your wallet is fat enough. Why do you want two different colors? If you want the shelf to stand out you can use pretty tile set along the edge of the shelf to help make the edge of the shelf.

I love the idea of two colors. Most baha or steps look lighter with less water on them. If I ever do a new pool I'm going to plaster the high areas in a darker color so that in the end they look the same as the pool's deeper end.

Hi All! I'm new to TFP and wish I had found you months ago! I am in Northern CA and am having a pool built, we just finished the gunite and are on to the tile and coping. I am kicking myself for not looking over the PB drawing carefully, as my pool looks so small! We are limited on space, but I really feel they did not utilize our space very well. We have to have a 5' space between our pool and the property line - we have a kidney shaped pool and spa and a small part is 6' from the property line, but the rest is upwards of 8+ feet. I wanted the biggest possible pool we could fit in the yard. Our pool is 13x32, 3'6" to 6'6". Have any of you others kicked yourself during/after construction for things you missed? I was so thrilled we could fit a pool I never thought to measure exactly on the grass - and I all I received was a basic drawing, not too many dimensions at all upon building. 100% my fault for not being more thorough, but jeez...anyone ever felt this way? (It didn't look this small at dig, only once they poured the gunite) Now trying to figure out landscape as pool will be further from fence.

Don't beat yourself up too bad. I went with a big boring rectangle maximizing every inch. But 95% of the time we are just looking at it, so the form comes in handy way more than the function. Yours will make your backyard feel more oasis-y for sure. When I sit in friends backyards with similar, it feels like I'm at some fancy schmancy hotel. Yours will too.

That's so nice of you, thank you for saying that! Don't you hate when you make big decisions like this and look back and realize you fretted about the stuff that didn't matter, and the big stuff you somehow missed?! Grrrr... But thank you for helping me look at it differently!
Are you doing patio all around ? The extra 2 ft will be a huge + in that spot for a lounger/ deck box / etc and still have room to walk by.
Yes, there will be a larger area for table and chairs, then behind the pool (the fencing area) I am putting a planter box along the fence line, then the conrete walk way, letme try to post some pics

I selected the smooth/broom finish, but the PB just dropped it off yesterday and it feels rough to me and has little rocks in it - is that still considered smooth/broom finish?
Acid wash finish coping they spray a chemical on the coping and power wash it off and it takes the butter off the top finish of the the concrete. This application was used in these pictures due to the coping was surrounded by sod and no decking so the finish needed to be course for wet feet if running. Brush finish you will have directional lines from the broom being pulled over the concrete while still having butter on the surface.
