New Build - SE Houston Area - Adding Salt too soon to Pool

Just know the water/pool will take a couple/few days to show what it's true color is. There might even be some extra green to it. NO worries.
Yep definitely a slight green hue right now but it’s being treated and brushed so I’ll be ready to see how in looks in a week

Pool startup has commenced and my last build question is whether I should seal the travertine deck. I understand once I do it I have to keep doing annually or semi-annually. The travertine is from QDI and looks like a good quality. The builder recommended sealing it and even supplied me with sealer - Advanced Armor Stone Sealer & Enhancer.

We do have a 6 month old so spills on the travertine will be a real thing. What are the thoughts from the board? I’ve done searches and it seems pretty split on to seal or not seal for a natural stone.

I am contemplating the sealing of my travertine coping right now , some of it is bar top, so it may have wine on it occasionally
I am looking into using the 511 impregnator (home depot lowes) , we had a leak in the shower of our new to us house and this stuff stopped it dead in it's tracks two years ago .
I just need to see if it is ok for pool chemical areas
it does not seem to make the surfaces any more or less slippery but it is pricey so a whole deck may get costly

I would think the sealer might make the stone slippery and with a little one coming on walking/running I would not take the chance.
Agreed. I do have some extra pieces I could test products on. I would almost certainly use a impregnating sealer so it doesn’t make it slippery but that may be unavoidable and I wouldn’t do it if it compromised the look or slickness of the deck.

I’ve seen this as well. I just don’t want it to effect the look of the travertine or keep sealing every other year if it’s not needed

I sealed my travertine when my pool was built 4 years ago. I haven’t done it since. It looks identical to when it was first put in. The “damage” from salt water is also a load of Crud. I can’t find one spot around my pool where there is any type of damage…Save your money and put it into a Chiller. You’ll thank me when you don’t have to swim in a huge hot tub in the summer.

My builder also advised not to seal the travertine but I was strongly considering it. When coping was being done I saved a couple larger size cut off pieces and put a sealer on to test it. It made no difference to the travertine look wise or feel wise to me after it dried which is what I wanted. I did not want shine. In the end I decided not to seal the travertine.

I did have the builder seal the ledge stone on the pool wall (which was not travertine). I also made samples on cut up leftover pieces prior and am pleased with how that turned out.

Edit: I pmed you pics of sealed vs not ledger stone.

HA thanks for the heads up. Just curious what sealer you used.

Since most of my yard is still dirt right now i started noticing a wet area by the equipment pad coming out from under the decking. The sand/dirt just kept staying moist while everywhere else was completely dry. I brought it up to my PB last week and I decided to do some investigating over the week as I was having rock landscaping installed today. I found some type of leak coming from under the new deck back towards the pool. While small i certainly did not want to have water constantly around the corner of my foundation, causing major issues down the road.

Long story short, I spoke with the PB thinking it was a plumbing leak but he confirmed they had the plumbing lines pressured up before plaster was installed to ensure there were no leaks. He is pretty confident it's a leak at one of the orficies or light fixtures in the pool from the plaster. He said most of these types of leaks are from the Pebble plasters. The PB is getting a leak detection company to re-pressure test the plumbing lines and then do a leak detection audit on my pool(essentially scuba diving with dye to check all orifices or any openings in the pool.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? I was pretty panicked this morning but the PB made it seem a little more common than I anticipated with the pebble plasters. I have Wet Edge Prism Matrix

Forgive the question, but any chance there was lawn irrigation pipes around this same patio area? The leak detection guys are very good at what they do. Old friend went through this on an older pool and it was pretty straight forward from detection to repair. Can you share a photo of the leak location on the patio near the equipment?

it's definitely not the irrigation. That was completely ripped up during the build. Here are some pictures. In the picture with the drain line exposed the wet area is just around the corner of the house for reference. you can see in the picture with the pool equipment the wet area is on the bottom right next to the foundation. The following two pictures show it.

Also, just got word from the PB that the earliest available appointment from the leak detection company is March 24th! Yikes. A little concerned again.

Is there any leaking at all around the DE filter assembly, or is the equipment pad 100% dry? Based on the pictures I wouldn't get too concerned, they will get it worked out.

No the pad is dry. Yea I’m not overly concerned. I cut the auto fill off so we’ll see how much the water level drops in the next day or so

So my pool guy came today and accidentally added a bag of salt to my pool and started the SWG. I stopped him before he added anymore as I'm only day 14 of my pool running. He got mixed up on me saying my startup was done and thought it had been in service a month. Question is how bad of a deal is this? Will it cause issues with the plaster, etc.?

No issue. Only 500 ppm or so.

Do be sure it is fully dissolved and mixed in . Brush vigorously.
