You know mice/rats will eat each other if their defenseless (legs caught/immobile, whatever) or dead? It's disgusting, lol.
A lot of the animal kingdom does. They help the herd one way or another. It’s my favorite thing about bears / alligators/ zombies. I don’t have to run fast. I only have to run faster than you.

I found a dead buck with a full rack in my pool one morning. Oh, was THAT fun. 
I work in the field and see 4 or 5 customers a day. I’ve met 2 that had a deer try to kick its way out after falling in and caused a catastrophic failure in the liner. I imagine the fiberglass would have not put up much fight either. So glad the pool survived. Maybe he had a heart attack and then fell in. Lol.
It was during mating season. Maybe he was despondent after rejection.
