Pool guy is leaving in a few weeks, what will I need?

My pool guy has been great but will be leaving at the end of the month. What will I need to maintain my own pool? The pool is about 35-40,000 gallon and was recently remodeled with mini pebble. The current pool guy normally uses chlorine pucks in floaters. I recently started using a Pentair rebel and plan to run it maybe once a week (8 hours) and have my skimmer run the rest of the days.

What else will I need to maintain? I know I need a testing kit (k2006 suffice or do I need the k2006c?). Should I also have strips on hand (recommendations?)?

The things I already have: wall whale and skimmer

What chemicals will I need on hand?

+1. The XL will be super handy because you’ll be testing a lot more frequently at first until you get to know your pools behavior.

The speed/ smart stir is an absolute MUST have for anyone who has ever used one. None of us will ever do without it. Just trust me there.

Can anybody help me out here, The best price I’m seeing for the K-2006C is about $175 and the regular TF-100 is $77. That would allow the XL and smart stir and still be a chunk cheaper. Am I missing something ?

Your location shows so cal. I assume that is somewhere in the LA Basin. Some members are able to get liquid chlorine and acid in reusable bottles from a HASA dealer. Might check that. Other wise Home Depot would have everything you need.

Going to head to homedepot this weekend... how much liquid chlorine and muractic acid do I need for about a one month's supply? And what strengths should these be bought in? Also, should i use dry acid?

And any downside to continuing the application of trichlor tabs?

Should last two years. But that kit, when purchased off Amazon, you never know how fresh the reagents are. That kit also has large bottles of reagents for tests you will not use as often (CH primarily).

Better is the TF100 or TFPro. The reagents in those kits are guaranteed to be fresh. And sized for the residential pool owner.
 
Without a signature it is hard to give much guidance. As far how much liquid chlorine, plan on adding 3 ppm FC per day. Acid, depends entirely on your pool volume, etc. A two gallon box of 31.45% will last more than a month, most likely. Do not use dry acid.

I think I am fine with the TF100, do you recommend the XL option?

That’s much better. It was $175 last week. But still. The TF-100 has a better arrangement of reagent sizes for how we test and is (at the current moment) $50 cheaper. That will pay for the smartstir and half the XL kit. It’s a no brainer

With the TF-100 you get known fresh chemicals.

With a test kit from Amazon you don't know the age of the chemicals you will get or the conditions under which it has been stored.
 
Be aware you say the pool guy used pucks. It would be important to test all levels and post them back here when you get them. Your CYA may be high and can be difficult to manage pool like that but only your testing is what we go with.
