Figuring out what RPM and how often to run pool pump to save some $$ on energy bill

Hey all. Things are going well with our new build, except by my math running my pool pump for 8 hours a day is currently costing me $45 a month. That’s totally fine if that’s how it needs to be, but I’m always about saving money. I have a Hayward VSP that says it goes from 740 rpms to over 3000. Right now I have my pump running 4 hours in the day and 4 hours at night at about 1700 rpms. I have a SWG and about 12000 gallons of water, not many trees or leaves. Do you guys think I could adjust this to try and save some energy? Water is clear currently using TFP test kit every few days. Would love to run it less daily and maybe just run it more while I’m actually in the pool.

Have you determined how low your pump rpm can run until your SWG stops working due to a low flow warning? You may be able to lower your pump speed and save some $ that way. If the skimmers work fine at 1700 then only run them at that speed as much to keep the surface clean.
 
Not to say you cannot run at a lower rpm, but at 1700 rpm what does your pump show the watts it is using? I would think it is not much more than 350 watt-hr. At 8 hours a day, that is 2.6kwh per day. 30 days is ~80kw. At 11 cents a kw, that is like $9.

Is there a way to tell the wattage? I did some estimate math wise. I estimated 1.72 kWh (1HP converts to that on a website I was using) so 1.72*8 (hours per day) is 13.76 * 30 days = 412 *11 cents is $45 and that’s about how much more my energy bill has been on average since the pool opened in may.

The energy consumed by a pool pump is measured in terms of Watts (W) or Kilowatts (kW).

That’s so funny you posted that because I just found the same info online. Thank you! Doing that math…there isn’t any reason my bills should be so high from the pool. Hmm maybe need to look at my AC usage. Thanks all
 
My tristar shows me on the main screen and its 320watts now at 1725 rpm now. adding or droppng 100 rpm only seemed to change it by 20 watts.
Think about it like this, wasn't that long ago all your light bulbs were 75 or 100 watt bulbs so running a pool pump is like leaving 3 or 4 lights on during the day :)

I think my old hayward superpump pulled around 10 amps or 2200 watts and I ran it 24x7. Now I use 320 watts and run from 8am until 11pm
