Hayward Sense & Dispense install

Update:
Since cleaning the probe and rebooting the OmniLogic, ORP readings have been more consistent and fluctuate less. I’m beginning to think it was the probe cleaning that resolved the issue and not the reboot. In retrospect I should have cleaned the probes prior to installing the system and would suggest those who install in the future do the same. I also think If I had done that I would not have experienced the initial Ozonator issues.

I’ve also noticed that my FC range has tightened up and now Its between 2.5ppm and 3.5ppm which is much better than the 2-4ppm I was seeing prior. I’m also seeing ORP respond quicker when chlorine is dispensed.

Update:
Not much to report at this point. System is working as designed. The weather in Texas is starting to heat up. Past few days have reached 80 and I’m definitely seeing the result of that. Prior to this week it was every other day that chlorine was dispensed. Now it’s becoming a daily occurrence with some exceptions. I’m still testing FC every day and will continue this through the dog days of summer just to make sure I’m not under chlorinating.

Question joboo7777 - Do you see ORP rise immediately after chlorine is dispensed? Do you ever see ORP drop immediately after chlorine is dispensed?

Based on the algorithm and amount of chlorine dispensed it does take some time before it starts to rise. It’s a very gradual increase and In many cases won’t reach set-point for 3-4 hours on average. As to the second question, I have not seen ORP drop immediately after chlorine has been dispensed.

Curious how the Chlorine use is going now that it's been warming up here in TX?
It’s hard to tell exactly, but it looks like I have around 5 gallons left. On March 26th I had 7 gallons. So I’ve used 2 gallons over the past 18 days which comes out to about 3/4 gallon a week give or take a few ounces. This is an increase of 1/4 gallon

this is yielding 3-4ppm on average per day. Lately more toward 3.5-4ppm side

the weather here in Tx has turned a bit. Much cooler and cloudy. As a result I’ve
seen less chlorine dispensing over the past 4-5 days. I’ve also noticed that during rain events ORP climbs quite a bit for a short period of time then normalizes within an hour or two after rain stops.

I’m out of town this weekend and can’t help but feel alittle anxious about the system. The piece I’m missing is the constant FC testing I do to ensure confidence in the ORP results. I don’t mind using ORP to trigger dispensing but I REALLY want a way to test FC automatically on a daily basis. I’ve tried waterguru but found the results to be inconsistent. I’m thinking of trying Sutro device which is also reagent based.

Anyone out there have the Sutro?

Update:

I had an incident where the GFCI my Chlorine dispenser was plugged in to was tripped due to some loose wiring inside my Omni. Of course this happens when I go away for a few days and have limited access to the equipment. Typically I run 780mV first thing in morning, then slowly drops throughout the day until the dispenser is trigger around 700mV. In this case the dispenser was triggered but since the GFCI was tripped it didn't actually run which dropped my ORP even further to around 665mV. Once I noticed the lower than normal ORP readings I knew something wasn't right. It was an easy fix as my electrician was able to come out and secure the wiring and reset the GFCI, however, the reason I was able to determine there was an issue in the first place was due to my ORP levels being lower than usual. I have gotten in the habit of checking my Omni Mobile app a few times a day to make sure all is ok, but I think I would like to see better alerting. The Omni does have email/text based alerting however the default alarms created for ORP are rather extreme. Below is the standard alerts created based on the manual:

ORP Alarm
The control will automatically set a high and low alarm for the ORP level. The high alarm point is 850mV and the low alarm point is 350mV. If the ORP level meets or exceeds these points, an alarm message will display locally and on all remote controls. Also, if the ORP level is too high, chlorine generation will shut down.

I'm going to reach out to Hayward to see if I can adjust the Low alarm point. 350mV seems very low and I would rather see a low alarm set at around ~650mV. this would allow me to catch and race to potential issues sooner.

Today I went through the last of the initial 12gallons of 10% chlorinating liquid I added back in mid January. Here are the stats on Chlorine consumption maintaining ~3-4ppm FC with average of 25ppm CYA

Jan 18th-March 26th - 5 gallons @ 1/2 gallon per week
March 27th - April 12th - 2 gallons @ 3/4 gallon per week
April 13th - May 3 - 5 gallons @ 1 1/2 gallons per week


Definitely a significant rise in chlorine consumption over the past 3 weeks. I also lowered my CYA to about 20 over the past month and think I'm going to hold there. If it starts to drop further I'll add a puck or 2 to raise it. I'm also going to try and get my FC to between 2.5ppm & 3.5ppm which means dropping my ORP set point to 720mV, maybe even 715mV. This should also help a little with consumption.

Sure looks like using ORP to manage FC is a lot more possible with LC dispensing than it is with an SWG. Thanks for sharing this info.
During my initial research on this forum I realized there definitely was a difference when using SWGs. And given the recommendation from this forum to use SWGs(rightfully so) I can see how ORP based chemical distribution systems can get a bad reputation.
 
Today I decided to add 3.5 oz of Orenda Pr-100000 phosphate remover to my pool. Yes, I know, if maintaining the right FC/CYA ratio I shouldn’t have to worry about phosphates. The way I look at it is it’s just an extra precaution taken to ensure the environment doesn’t promote the growth of Algae.

The reason I’m posting this experience is because oncce the liquid was added my ORP readings went from 710mV to 510mV fast! I ended up disabling chlorine dispensing until the ORP readings normalize. If it remains low by tomorrow morning I’m going to try cleanthe probe.

Just a heads up for those using ORP and phosphate remover. ;)
 
Update:
Yesterday I decided to clean both ORP and PH probes with dish detergent(dawn) and a soft tooth brush. This was really more of a proactive maintenance activity as I was not having any issues. After the cleaning both PH and ORP readings were all over the place. PH reading 10 and ORP reading low 600’s mV. I decided to disable dispensing until they normalized which took about 2 hrs. PH went right back to 7.7 which is my set point and ORP readings are still on the low side but not by much. Iclose enough for me to enable dispensing and will be keeping and eye on it in case I need to adjust my ORP set-point accordingly.

CYA is steady at 20ppm and my FC has been fluctuating between ~2ppm and ~3ppm. Very interested to see how much chlorine I have consumed since refilling in early may. Hopefully the Texas Monsoon season is coming to an end and will then see the true effect of the Texas Sun and FC consumption. I will make sure to document my results in this thread.
 
It’s been a month since I filled my dispenser with 12 gallons of 10%. Today I checked and it looks like I have around 4 gallons left. That comes to 33oz a day or 1.8 gallons a week. up from the previous month by .3 gallons a week while maintaining 2-3ppm FC level @20ppm CYA.

we are Heading in to the summer months so I’m expecting to break the 2 gallons per week mark shortly. Not sure where I’ll peak but with the Texas sun/heat coming I wouldn’t be surprised if I hit 3 gallons a week by August.

Since January 18th. I’ve spent $108.10 on 24 gallons of 10% Liquid chlorine. I still have 4 of the 24 gallons in the dispenser which will go pretty fast this month.

Jan 18th-March 26th - 5 gallons @ 1/2 gallon per week
March 27th - April 12th - 2 gallons @ 3/4 gallon per week

Today I added some Calcium chloride to my pool. Within a few minutes my ORP readings jumped from 700mV to 800mV. I did this around 9am in the morning and for most of the day my ORP readings were artificially inflated. I actually had to manually add some Liquid Chlorine to keep parameters in check😱

yup, I know. I went old school and poured bleach in to a measuring cup and dispense using my own arm!

Anyway, in the future I’m probably going to add CaCl2 in the even hours when ORP measurements are not as critical since it increases to about 750mv on a regular basis anyway.

so far I’ve found 2 chemicals to be aware of that have an impact on ORP(other than Chlorine)

1) Orenda Phosphate removal. ORP readings significantly decreased

2) Calcium Chloride. ORP readings significantly increased
 
Another Beautiful day in North Texas!

Last week I performed some routine maintenance on the dispenser pumps by replacing the Feeder Tube for each. Hayward recommends changing every 4-6 months and it took about 10mins to do. My Chlorine utilization is increasing. Im currently maintaining 15-20 CYA with FC 2 - 3 ppm.

Here are latest stats:
Jan 18th-March 26th - 5 gallons @ 1/2 gallon per week
March 27th - April 12th - 2 gallons @ 3/4 gallon per week
April 13th - May 3rd - 5 gallons @ 1 1/2 gallons per week
May 3rd - June 3rd - 8 gallons @ 1.8 gallons per week.
June 3rd - June 23 - 8 gallons @ 2.8 gallons per week.

Currently Chlorine Cost
Since January 18th. I’ve spent $160 on 36 gallons of 10% Liquid chlorine. I still have 7 of the 36 gallons in the dispenser.

Since the early heat wave has subsided I can already tell my consumption has gone down this week. We'll see how that impacts the average over next few weeks.
