Hi everyone! I am so incredibly thankful to have stumbled upon this site just as I am embarking on a new pool project! This will be my first time so I am excited but also very nervous and would just like more than anything for this to go smoothly! So, with that said I will jump right in! I was told my design is incorrect (gallons and depth scale) and missing a bunch of things. I am no longer working with original designer and it has already been stamped for approval by engineering. I don’t want to have any issues along the way and start off on the wrong foot with the wrong design. If anyone has any input on what is wrong with the design and can I just ask the engineer to fix it? My apologies for my remedial questions and Thank you in advance!

The only couple of things I would say is to verify your depths are water depth if that is what you want, not from floor to top of beam.

For the spa, 6x6 may be a bit tight. If you stick with that size, you may only want benches on 3 walls, it's highly unlikely that you will get enough occupants comfortably to use all 4 sides. Eliminating one side of benches will make it feel larger and reduce gunite cost marginally. This is just my opinion, don't change your design based on that, just an idea. We had a 5x8 spa before with 1 side open and it worked well for us.

I would guess that whoever told you it's wrong is trying to get you to use a builder by scare tactics that you can't do it yourself. There are many on here who have done it, and some of us working on our second go around. It's quite doable, and your subs do this every day, they will help you if something doesn't look quite right to them, just ask lots of questions.

I don't see anything that jumps out at me. Are there benches along each long side of the pool?

Who told you this?
Hi Kimkats, thanks for the response! Another designer told me lol. However, I think he is right in some aspects as he said the depth profile doesn’t match. The gallons are incorrect. I have no idea what they are suppose to be but based on what I read online, should be around 13,500. And then No equipment is listed. I was told that it wouldn’t get permitted in this state. I’m no longer working with prior designer so to get it changed I would probably have to pay another designer to “fix” or redesign completely for a big fee or if I can figure it out on my own, then I can fix it!

Thank you for the suggestions! We were thinking the same thing about the spa so I think we will maybe change to 7x7. Would that be enough space to have people sitting on all 4 sides? It was actually an independent designer who told me it wouldn’t pass permitting and I suspect he may be right. 😳 And, I’m sorry what do you mean about verifying depths?

I would get Pentair equipment. When you buy at least 3 Pentair products on one invoice professionally installed you get a 3 year warranty.

  • Pump - Intelliflo VSF 011056
  • Filter - CCP 520 cartrridge filter
  • Automation controls - Pentair IntelliCenter i5ps bundle with IC40 SWG
  • Heater - Raypak 400K BTU NG heater or Pentair MasterTemp 400K
  • Lights - Pentair Microbrite or get a standard white incandescent or halogen pool light
May I ask, where do I buy equipment?

So, miraculously my plans got approved and permit was issued! Wooohoo! Dig begins tomorrow. I still have no idea how many gallons are in my pool. Also, could anyone let me know what kind of pump I should be using for my water features (3-36” sheer descents)? And also, what depth do most people get for the wet deck/baja shelf/sun deck? Thank you!

 on the permits!!!! OH YEAH!

Splash pad-some questions to help you answer this for your wants and needs.
-How do you think you will use the pad? sitting on the shelf or putting chairs on it?
-If it is sitting on the shelf where do you want the water to hit you? Just covering legs? up to tummy? up to chest?
-If it is sitting on chairs do you want your bum in the water while sitting on the chairs? Oh and what kind of chairs?

Me? IF I had a sun shelf I would want to sit on the shelf with the water up to my tummy.

Make sure you are talking about WATER depth for your pool/shelf depth. Some PB don't take that into account. They do depth as bottom of the pool to the just under the coping. That is NOT water depth. Water depth is the middle of the waterline tile and skimmer opening.

Use a tape measure to see how deep the water will need to be to hit you where you want it to.

Awesome thank you! Looks like I am getting most of these things. I just am buying from plumber and while it is wholesale pricing , it’s slightly than what my neighbor paid 3 months ago. Does equipment prices increase just within 3 months?

Yeah! Pretty happy they passed since at least 3 designers told me it wouldn’t. Anyway all great questions! We would want it to be in lounge chairs and water up to tummy. We are getting 18” which I believe is double the standard 9” we were told that most people get. Figured We can always put risers on loungers and it will still be a good area for a “kiddie pool”. Thoughts on pump for water feature?

It does when you have a Texas freeze destroying more pool equipment then is typically sold in a year.

For sheer descents, the flow requirements are about 9 to 20 gpm per linear foot.

At 9 feet total, that's between 81 and 180 gpm. See reference below.

It depends on how high the sheer is above the water and how much projection you want.

You can use a water feature pump, which is optimized for water features with high flow and low head loss.

The problem with a single speed pump is that you can't really control the flow other than by using a valve on the discharge.

I would go with an Intelliflo XF so that you can adjust the flow to what you want.

For suction, you want to keep the water velocity below 6 ft/sec. For returns, you want to keep the water velocity below 8 ft/sec.

Size.......6 ft/sec......8 ft/sec.

1.5"...........38...............51 gpm
2"..............63...............84 gpm
2.5............90.............119 gpm
3.0".........138.............184 gpm
4”...........234.............313 gpm

15 gpm per linear foot is 135 gpm. I would use a minimum of 3" pvc pipe for the suction and go to 4" if you really want to crank up the flow to 20 gpm per linear foot (180 gpm).

Check the installation manual for the exact product that you will use.

I would go with a 4" suction line and then run a separate 2" line with a Jandy Neverlube valve on each line to each sheer so that you can get perfect balance.

I would run the water through a 520 square foot cartridge filter.
