24K gallon, vinyl liner. Chlorine for last 22 years and now want to go “salt”. I’ve had good experience with all Pentair products so i’m considering the Intellichlor IC40. Any thoughts? thanks- great forum!

Do you have an automation system? What type of pump do you have? Where do you live?

The IC40 is great if you have a Pentair automation system or plan to install one. If not, then I would suggest looking at Circupool SWCG's.

No automation system and not sure i can afford it. Pentair Superflo 1 hp, Kansas City area. Currently Pentair Tagelus sand filter - considering replacement with a cartridge filter. thanks!

Hey Rick !! Just tossing this out there that the buy in for the SWG is the most expensive part. After you’ve joined the club, going up 50% to a 60k model (Pentair or Circupool) only costs about 20% more and the extra lifespan reduces the overall ROI. Keep us posted !!

thanks- great advice. i’m assuming 60K unit for 24K pool works less/lasts longer? Seems like overkill at first glance

The larger unit needs to run X amount of less time to produce the same amount of FC. They are rated for 8k-10k hours of operation, so less time on/running means that much more lifespan. So let’s assume you pool is 20k gallons even. A 20k unit will need to run 24/7 and reach end of life in a couple of seasons. A 40k unit will need to run 12 hours a day lasting twice as long and a 60k unit needs 8 hours a day lasting 3X as long as the 20k unit. (All else being equal). But the cost difference from the 20k to the 60k is only 40%(ish) for 3X the life.

With a single speed pump I assume you will prefer to run fewer hours. Also, without automation, the Pentair Intellichlor is only adjustable in increments of 2% from 0-10% and 20% from 20-100% generation. Not a big deal, but you would have to adjust your pump run time often to manage your FC generation.

Most of the Circupool SWCG's are more adjustable. You would need to research them to see which best fits your needs.
