Bathroom Usage Issues

I’m wondering if there are some ideas about how to deal with bathroom usage when using the pool. My situation is that we have a half bath inside the house, not too far from the back door. The problem is that as you walk in the house, you step onto a laminate floor and then walk onto a tile floor as you make your way to the bathroom. While the floor is not ultra slippery, both surfaces certainly have the potential to be slippery. We have my wife and I at home and our main visitor usage is my daughter, her husband and our three grandkids 5, 10 and 14. Sometimes they do bring a friend so the number of people can get up there.

Driving home tonight my wife and I were talking about things to do with the yard/pool area this year. Last year was our build year so we still need furniture and shade. My wife said she’d like some way to have people be able to go to the bathroom outside. There’s no way the budget would allow anything like a pool house and there would be no financially practical way to tie into the sewer. One thing I thought of was a composting toilet, but really my focus is just to make the house as safe as possible. The bathroom is pretty close to the door and I don’t mind people coming into the house but the water and safety are concerns.

Of course the cheapest, safest thing to do is make sure anyone going into the house is dry and that kids don’t run. But, I’m not that naive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What about runner like rugs from the outside door to the bathroom?. They can even be only for company swimming days and taken out for the occasion. People will say 'oh thats a great idea so we don't soak the place' and not 'why did you put out tacky rugs'.

You could run a line of nonslip mats to the bathroom, and just set them out when the kids are using the pool.

I have a welcome mat like this that does a good job absorbing water Waterhog™ Carpet Mat - 18 x 27", Charcoal H-1994GR - Uline ...could buy a couple until you reach the bathroom or get one to your preferred dimensions!

When the pool opened last year, I tried to enforce the “go before” rule by saying that if you got out too soon and had to go in the house that you wouldn’t be able to get back into the pool. That plan was quickly abandoned when my daughter pointed out that all I was actually doing was encouraging them to pee in the pool. So much for that idea, but I still work to encourage pb4uswim. Thankfully no one slipped and hurt themselves last year, but I know I slipped a bit and realize it’s only a matter of time that someone gets hurt if I don’t do something. Worst thing is that once water is on the floor, things like sandals can become more slippery than bare feet.

The rugs are a good idea if a can get the right ones. Some rugs or towels seem worse than just the floor.

I like the ones @mrbookmanlibrarycop linked in post #3. The bottoms seem like they would stay put and the top would absorb more than its fair share of drips.
I too have seen those used for that... I have also seen a simple hallway type throw rug to connect the door to the bathroom.. or at least get people most of the way there. As long as they are not running it seems to work well.

Good luck with the "P" "B4" the swim.. Considering the age or the exuberance of the swimmers.. your results will Depends... ;)

Geez, just tell them that you got the urine detector dye for pools. Make sure they see you dump a 1/4 cup of salt in the pool for dramatic effect.

Also you could get an outdoor shower, even if it is just a portable contraption that hooks into the garden hose. You dont ask questions when they go take a shower in the middle of swimming, and nobody slips and falls inside... its a win-win.

I have a retention wall around my pool with a big french drain inlet in the grass directly behind the wall and level almost. One day an older neighbor sat down there and informed me she wouldn't make it to the indoor loo. If she hadn't mentioned anything I wouldn't have had a clue!!

I like the shower idea... with a drain to french drain or sewer line? Warm water would be an ideal "coverup".

The *little toddler boys* love to run to the edge of the decking and let it fly. Who can resist such juvenile freedom to lower trou and go? So cute, at least for a couple young years. Maybe a large Pee Pot filled with river stones and over some grass in a private spot for the boys??

Skippy says all grown men who buy their own homes pee on their land at least once....rite of passage?

My goodness I think I've become an earth mother.

Ok so PB4..... let’s take all the combo-d thoughts above and mash them up. How about a RV/marine style (actual) toilet in a small fenced off shower like area. Hang some sort of cute-sy sign that it’s for #1s only and have a garbage for the paper waste. They make tanks for Campers and boats that you could empty as needed or you could just run the hose to a double purpose gravel spot close by.

have rugs inside in case it’s serious.

Is the bathroom against an outer wall in the home? If so, the easiest answer is to add another door to the bathroom directly to the outside. That is what I had in my home GA - the lower floor/garage opened to the pool, so I built my man cave in the basement and added a bathroom with a door to the mancave and to the outdoors patio. Problem solved.

I now have the same problem here in FL... no way to modify the home I have now - at least not like that!

No. It’s in the middle of the house. Plus, after the pool, the budget and tolerance for and more contractors on my land is zero. Need to keep this on the basic end. Appreciate the thought though. That would be sweet.

Starting to lean toward the mash up. Thinking no way around getting some rugs, so spend some money there and find some that will work really well for this purpose. The Water Hogs recommended by mrbook are a good looking option. Then, find a way to set up a pee pot of some sort behind the shed. Basically, boys outside and girls inside. Thankfully I live on pure sand so drainage will be no problem. I like the idea of a RV toilet. I’ll look into that if I can figure out a good place for a little outhouse type structure.

That right there will remove half of the ‘problem’.

But be forewarned. The smaller girls will think it’s no fair that they have to leave to relieve. The grown women probably will too, but they will be silent about it, secretly wishing that they too could use the pee-ditch9000 (Or whatever you come up with).

Hey, if they yearn for the great outdoors, who would I be to stop them :D

We built a red cedar cabana that provides nice shade and has a full outdoor kitchen, bathroom and shower. The bathroom was sorta an afterthought that my wife pushed for. Turned out to be a great decision. It really adds a lot of value to the backyard pool area.

Growing up, my parents had a 2 story house and didn't have a bathroom on the main floor. So it was run inside (omg the a/c has a bite to it), up the stairs and you had to go through most of the house to get to the stairs, all carpet... yikes but I guess we made it work. So many memories of running through the house like the floor is lava. 🤣 I don't remember my parents complaining about wet carpets. Perhaps they were just happy we used the bathroom?

My husband & I have a ranch and our main bathroom is accessible to the pool. We could put in a door to the exterior wall and it would work okay. The only issue is it's a weird, triangular shaped bathroom and we would have to take out some of the granite counter tops for some people in order to squeeze through. We looked at adding a bathroom to the garage and even a composting toilet.

We decided to go with an outdoor cabana with a bathroom. The bathroom will be a 3 season one with one of those water hydrants so we can shut it off for our lovely Iowa winters. It is the most expensive option but our kids are small and with years of them having friends over, hopefully it will be worth it.

We just had a derecho come through last August and we were so very lucky to have no damage. We are really taking our chances witha cabana.
