SWG run time calculations assistance

I knew that stupid coupling between the copper heater pipe and the PVC was going to be a problem.


Home Depot, Lowe's, and Ace Hardware do not have a fitting that fits that collar. The guy at Lowe's insisted it was NPT threads even though it's 9 threads per inch and NPT is 11-1/2 (and why would you have tapered threads on a coupling?). I tried anyway and the collar does not thread onto the 2-inch NPT fitting he sold me.

I tried looking at the unions and couplings and nothing available in the stores fit. The 1-1/2 inch repair couplings came the closest, but they were too large. The 1 inch repair couplings were too small.

Does anybody know what kind of fitting has 9 threads per inch on 2-inch pipe?

It looks like it's NST, not NPT. If that's accurate, it means that piece is a male to male 1-1/2 to 2-inch adapter with NST threads on one end and a male slip fit on the other. How the heck am I ever going to find that now that my pool pump can't run until I can?

Has Circupool provided any further response?

I've been talking back and forth with them, but in the end their position is that you can't measure the performance of the cell by measuring FC in the pool. That means I have no way to verify performance. All I can say is that the pool takes 2 ppm per day of liquid chlorine to stay above 5 ppm and that even 4 hours of run time at 100% can't keep my FC above 5. By direct calculation 4 hours should create about 2.75 ppm in my pool.

Circupool feels that as long as the pool has 1 ppm FC everything's fine. They do not operate by the CYA/FC relationship.

I gave up and just bypassed the heater for now. Back in operation minus the SWG.

EDIT - Bypassing the heater had a much larger than expected effect. The filter pressure dropped from 10 to 6 psi and the water pulls in to the skimmer like Niagra Falls.

Below is a summary of the testing that was reported in this thread. Compare the rated production (CL Power column) for each test to the actual demonstrated output (Realized Output column). It clearly shows that @sbcpool, @HeyEng. and @Dave_NJ RJ-60s, which were all installed this year, are not producing anywhere near the specified production rate of the RJ_60. @Hootz's data point, which is not included below, implies that his(?) RJ-60, which was installed last year, is producing near the specified production rate. It would be good if Hootz would run a similar test as what was performed to get the data below and confirm that it is working as specified. In addition, I think we are still waiting on @DAB942 to perform a test on his RJ-60 which was also installed this year.

Hopefully in the next week or two I will have further data. I contacted the contractor who is doing my remodel and he's agreed to install the IntelliFlo, heater, and IC-60 soon. I will be able to run the IntelliFlo at close to the same rate as the current pump and test the IC-60 output without having changed my pool's water. The results of that test will be pretty definitive in my book.

Just remember that the IC-60 is rated at 2 lbs per day, which is a third lower output than what you were expecting from the RJ-60. For your 20k gallon pool the IC-60 at 100% will make 12 ppm per day, or 0.5 ppm per hour.

I'm counting on it. With my CYA around 50 I'm burning 1.5 - 2.0 FC per day. Even if I didn't raise my CYA the four hour runtime should be sufficient. If the SWG is working as expected I will raise the CYA to around 70 or 80. I don't know if the relationship to FC loss is linear, but if it is I would expect to lose about 1.0 - 1.5 FC per day, which should easily be taken care of in 4 hours.

Well dang it. All the pictures of burned out Pentair cells on Amazon have me a little hesitant about that brand. Not sure where to turn at this point. I really wish there was a way to do chlorine injection, but my pad has nowhere to store chlorine without running lines under/across concrete or in direct sun

I thought about the same thing, before I made the SWG decision. I don't have a practical way of keeping it out of the sun. Just finished SLAMing, so I can accurately measure output and the retaining ring on my filter split. Will have to wait until next week.

Update. As noted earlier, I took up CircuPool's offer to return the RJ60+. I received their RMA and packed up the unit and shipped it 8/24. It was delivered to CircuPool 8/28. After waiting 5 days and not receiving any refund I emailed CircuPool Wednesday to inquire about the status of my RMA. By this morning I still had not received any response to my inquiry. I checked my spam folder to verify I hadn't missed any emails from CircuPool. 7 days after they had received my return without any kind of acknowledgement or credit, and with no answer to my inquiry about the status of my return I initiated a dispute with my credit card this morning for the full purchase price.

I found something very interesting today. Amazon is selling the Hayward AquaRite for 40,000 gallon pools for $892, which is a steal.

That is a fantastic price. I paid about 950 in July for one in a damaged box.
