Basic vacuuming questions (and SLAM)

I have some basic questions about vacuuming.

The SLAM instructions talk about vacuuming. I'm not clear if that refers to using a robot or to manually vacuuming the pool.

I use a Hayward robot. But I've been told that I should take it out when I "shock" the pool (i.e. when the chlorine level is really high). If that is true, then it seems that I can't use it when I SLAM.

Can I use the Hayward during SLAM? If so, are there any Do's and Don'ts?

Or do I need to get a manual vacuum? If yes, then pretend for a moment I know nothing about manual vacuums (in over 30 years of pool ownership, I've never used or even owned a manual vacuum). Can you please point me to some resources as far as: 1) what to buy; and 2) the basics on how to use a manual vacuum (where to plug in, etc.).

It is assumed that you are using the SLAM process because you have algae. As the algae breaks down due to high chlorine level during SLAM it is best to pick it up and put it to waste, not through your filter. Normally you get a manual vacuum head with a pool or the previous owner should have left it. The most simple vacuums has a vacuum head that attaches to your extendable pole (remove your skimmer net or brush), a hose (like 1 1/2" )that attaches to the vacuum head, and the other end of the hose fits in the hole at the bottom of the skimmer (remove the basket). Some have a plate that fits over the skimmer with a place to attach the hose. After hooking these up, Turn your valves to waste setting (not return to the pool), turn your valves for suction to the skimmer and turn on pump. Now you can vacuum. There are newer versions that are battery operated but they have small catch baskets. Best if you can push your vacuum to a waste line. Now you will need to add some water to compensate for what you vacuum. Another version is the vacuum head has a net on it, thus you do not need to push it to waste, just ensure the net is fine enough to pick up small particles.

Yep. That will work. Just hook up the hose and ensure your valving is correct before vacuuming. If you do vacuum through the filter, you will need to backwash it or rinse if the pressure in it builds too high.

I think it would depend on how bad the situation is before SLAMMING. I recently did a SLAM (the water was slightly cloudy with a very small patch of light algae which never returned after day 1) with no manual vacuuming, just daily brushing and I did run the cleaner a few times throughout.
