Does anyone in the Phoenix, Arizona area have a place they recommend for chlorine bottle exchange? I currently recycle my 1 gallon containers, but at 3.5 gallons a week it still feels so wasteful. It’d be great to have a place to pop in and exchange.

What percent chlorine are you using? 3.5gallons in 10k pool seems excessive if using 10% or higher percentage chlorine. I use about 1/2 gallon or less of 12.5% every other day - even in this 110*+ heat and intense sun. Do you have a high bather load or lots of organics entering the pool? What is the date code on the chlorine you have been using? Is your CYA still at 50?

Where in the valley of the sun are you located?

3.5 Gallons a week is 1/2 gallon a day - about double what you are using.

We swim in the pool almost every day.
What is the date code on the chlorine you have been using?
I always try to buy something that has been put on the shelf in the last 30 days.
Is your CYA still at 50?
Yes.

Phoenix.

Call around to your local pool stores and ask if they carry chlorine in refillable bottles. They come in a 4 pack tote. You pay a refundable deposit on the tote and jugs. All I haveever seen in the Phoenix area is the Hasa brand as their bottling plant is close.

See @Azcal post above for a couple suggested locations.

I know the temps and sun have been brutal the last week or so, but 1/2 gallon of 10% in 10k gallon pool seems a bit high to me. You may want to consider an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test to be sure you aren't losing more than 1ppm FC overnight.

When I could find 10% I had no issue with the plastic bottles. Easy to recycle of course but these study clear jugs with solid blue lids also come in handy for reuse as emergency water storage, plant/fertilizer water jugs, cut off the bottoms for parts storage and use the tops for funnels with handles. Fill empties with old motor oil for recycling, or with sand or water for weighting tarps or as tie downs. Also use for mixing bottles, floats, dried food bulk storage, arrow targets, emergency fuel transport....the list goes on and on. Now that the 10% has gone the way of toilet paper, I am using the 12.5% with returnable bottles and I have learned that some of these much used bottles have small leaks or seam cracks so be sure to check them carefully before you load them up. I still have saved many of the clear plastic jugs with the solid blue caps but one day I am going to have to go back to the 10% and stock back up.

I did this after I replaced over half of my water at the beginning of the season. No algae. Others here have noted they use roughly the same amount as me, so I’ve not thought twice about it until your post.

I am on a similar journey as you. Just called almost all the pool stores in the area. Sounds like Lowe’s might be where I’m heading. Home Depot is 8.98 for 2 gallon of 10% and B&L pool has 4 packs for 15.49.

I actually just got off the phone with the HASA sales rep. She recommended Pool Supply Warehouse in Glendale.

Also Leslie’s pro on Tatum and Thunderbird and on Dunlap and 43rd do it but their prices were super high.

In FL most pool stores provide refillable 2.5 gal jugs this time of year ~$8 for 5 gal of 10.5 %. In many locations Napco also supplies bulk chlorine.
