I'm a failure for father's day

I just checked CYA, at 30, you can barley see the black dot, and only if your standing directly in the sun. It truly disappears around 23.
CYA can only be measured in 10 ppm increments. So a 23 is rounded up to 30.
You can stop testing CYA till after the SLAM is complete. It will stay there and not really change.
My FC was just at 11.5, I added a cup of 12.5%, last added some about 1.5 hours ago.
Great. Retest and add more chlorine. Remember Shock Level And Maintain. :thumleft:
Remember to vacuum slowly and afterwards brush walls and floor. You don't have to vacuum to waste but the pressure will increase quicker. Vacuum to waste will dump a lot of water.

did your son get all the debris off the bottom ? If not it will take a truckload of chlorine and a million cartridge cleanings to get the water clear .... /sarcasm off

I just went out with the skimmer and tried to drag the whole pool in sections. I ended up bringing out two full skimmers worth of leaves, but after those first two, only little stuff. Right now the kids are brushing the walls

It's eating up about 5 FC every 2-3 hours. I've skimmed the bottom, but I can't see it. Also, I just realized, the app went back to 7.5% when I'm using 12.5%, so all day I've been adding almost twice as much as I should be.

Actually you're not adding as much as you should be. If SLAM is supposed to be 12, FC needs to get to 12 and stay there. Actually you are NOT in a SLAM if you don't. You are prolonging your SLAM and agony.
We just had a pretty big jump in FC. At 12:30pm it was 11.5 so we added around a cup. Two hours later at 2:30 its saying it is at 7.5. Recorded all to pool math log.
FC is Free Chlorine and you want it to stay high for the SLAM.
Have you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry - Trouble Free Pool ?
I don't think you understand the SLAM.

Are you saying I should go above 12 to keep it at 12? The slam page says use the CYA table to know what my FC is. That table says 12. The SLAM guide also says don't check your water more then 1 hour. So if I'm checking about every hour, and still dropping below 12, my only guess is I need to be at 14? I'm confused.

My filter is a single cartridge that gets clogged up quickly during a slam. Seems like right now I have to clean it every couple of hours to keep the water moving. Would it make more sense to remove the cartridge, maybe overnight, so the water doesn't sit still, while the chlorine kills the green stuff?

While in the initial stages of a SLAM process, taking out the cartridge filter can make sense if it is plugging quickly. As discussed earlier in your thread, our filter is very small, so you will need to clean it more often.

What I'm saying is you have super dirty water. If you add to reach 12 in an hour you are below 12 and wasting time. Figure out how much FC you have been adding and ballpark what your burning up. If its 3ppm every 2 hrs shoot for 13-14. I leave pools for weeks with water and no equipment sometimes during builds not by choice just the way it goes. I've cleared green water with liquid and a sump pump with no filtering at all just heavy dosing of chlorine my test method is my eyes and nose

Thank you, I'm gonna pull it just so I can get some sleep tonight. I'm also going to get the FC up to 20 so hopefully it will stay above 12 overnight.

You dont need to go that high like I said just overshoot it a little and stay at or just above dont let it creep to single digits.

Main thing is brush the walls and keep scooping bottom. Use a brush to push to one area and scoop out with a leaf net. Every little piece of debris out helps

After getting it up to 20 FC last night before bed, and removing the filter cartridges, it was at 11 FC when I woke up this morning.

I added enough to get it back up to 15 and will check it in a couple of hours. Also I have my filter cartridges soaking in dish soap and water.

I'm not sure I'm getting anywhere. It's been almost a week. I started with 16 gals of liquid shock that is 12.5% and I have 3 gallons left. This is what my pool looks like:

My target is 12, so I've been trying to keep it around 15 so it's above 12. At night I have been putting it at 20 so I can sleep. My filter needs to be cleaned every hour because its small so often I've been running it without the cartridge so that the water can keep flowing. My kids have vac it a bunch of times. There just doesn't seem to be a change.

Here is what the last 24 hours was like:

Note: The day before, on Friday, we were seeing about 1-2 FC loss per hour, but yesterday's numbers below seemed to me much slower. Yesterday seemed cloudy(the sky), not sure if that was the diff.

- The night before I made it 18-20 so I could sleep.
- 8:00am 14.5 FC, didn't add anything but cleaned filter
- 9:30am cleaned filter
- 10:00am 11 FC, added 49oz
- 12:30pm 11.5 FC added 43oz
- 2:45pm 14 FC added nothing. Water in pool was moving but not moving in skimmers so I removed the filter cartridge and left it out for the rest of the day and last night.
4:00pm 13.5 FC, added 18oz
6:35pm 13 FC, added 25oz
9:00pm 13 FC, added 25oz
11:20pm 15 FC, it was bedtime so I took it up to 17 for the night, adding 3 cups

This morning:
8:00am 13 FC, added 25oz.

I only have 3 gals of liquid shock left out of the original 16 gallons.
