I drug my feet a little on pouring concrete because I really wasn't excited about it. I don't like the concrete we have - the color, stamp, the way it was formed... but ripping it all out probably isn't worth the expense and labor.
I got it all dug out and formed up, took my best guess at the color and rented some stamps. Since this is such a small pour I opted to widen my driveway and replace a section that was scabbed together.
These are right when I finished. The color mellowed out and its actually pretty close to the existing concrete. I think it turned out as good as it could - it's definitely not perfect but it's good enough?

Looks good very nice match. I'm jealous of you warm climate guys! Freezing over here......I just got my grill delivered monday gonna start my setup soon. I'm looking forward to your progress I'll post mine as I go too. Wife wants me to extend a walkway behind grill for a standalone hottub. I can never finish anything before the next request comes down. She's even got the kids in on it with this. one. SMH sometimes
Are you a steel stud guy for the islands? I hate working with those things...
Since mine is under a solid cover I think I'm going to use wood. I can probably frame the entire thing as fast as it would take me to slice my hand open with steel studs?

Plus we had strong Santa Ana winds the past few days, at least 5 oranges fell off my tree, and I had to take some leaves out of my pool...tough times in SoCal.
Well done B! I am sure it is closer than anyone else could get it! LOL on getting you money worth out of the stamp! That looks great! I can't wait to see it when it mellows out some with the color!

Man you guys are really rubbing it in......in the teens here this morning and windy. I do either block or steel studs. Mine is going to be out of the same retaining wall block as the face is. Its gonna sit on an existing wall and will overhang a bar top onto patio. Backside is a little higher grade i will make a small paver walk area attaching to the backedge of cap of wall, so a step up to go around island and cook facing the patio. The reason wood is frowned upon is the heat. Wood gets brittle over time with heat and above 600 it breaks down. I've seen it done and usually they put a pair of screens in to let air flow. Steel studs aren't bad just cut with an old chop saw they have a blade meant just for them not a carborundem blade it's like a wood blade with wierd teeth. Use a butterfly vice grip and pin the stud to track and use a flat head self tapper meant for studs. It goes faster than you think. When u use snips to cut it takes too much time. I also use heavier studs 20 guage usually only 25 is in big box store. The heavier studs have a higher G rating that's the galvanizing. Regardless get some thin PVC and set it under the rails. I grab a half or full sheet of 1/4" pvc sheet material it's like plywood and about 40bucks and rip 3.5" rips and sit the bottom rail on it. Buying 1x4 PVC trim to use costs way more even the no name brands.
