just bought a house with a inground swimming pool, my question is, is it safe and recommended to use a heavy duty extension cord on a cgi outlet to power the pool cover pump since the connection between the extension cord and pump will be in water?

HI and welcome to TFP!

the connection between the extension cord and pump will be in water

Do you mean where you would plug the pump cord into the extension cord?? If so NO!! Don't even think about allowing that to happen.

You might have to find a pump with a longer cord of find a way to have the pump closer to the side of the pool. Share a pic of what you are working with and we might be able to help you figure something safer out.

Welcome to TFP.

"since the connection between the extension cord and pump will be in water" - you mean in the pool water? in puddles of water on the deck?

Pool cover pumps come with a long cord that should be long enough to keep the plug out of the pool water. If you need to use an extension cord to reach an outlet then find some way to elevate the connection with the heavy duty 20Amp outdoor rated extension cord above the ground. Sling the cord over some bushes or tie it along a fence or elevate it using a plastic box to keep it out of any water.

I use one of these outdoor extension cord covers. It works fine in rain, but I sure wouldn't have it on the pool cover which gets ponds of water! Mine is on the deck and the pump cord is long enough. These cord covers do wear out eventually from weather exposure, so the 2-pack isn't a bad idea.
