Hey TFPers,

We are locking in some final details on a bid this week and I need to decide if we put in an outdoor kitchen in the new cabana. And if so do I create a built-in space for a gas grill and our existing big green egg?

Current setup the backdoor from living room goes to a deck off the house with partial-cover pergola, I have a table with the egg on this existing deck. It's close to the house and garage so I can go in and out while grilling or smoking.

The new pool build is going start in the yard about 15 yards out from the current deck stairs. So go down the current deck steps into the yard over a short stone walkway then through a new fenced in area with pool, deck, cabana, fire pit. Do I move the egg into this new area or leave it on the existing deck?

Would y'all be more or less inclined to walk out to the new area to grill/smoke? I have wireless temp sensors to monitor longer cooks and will extend wifi out there.

Summary of options:
- keep egg on existing deck in the table (now aged a bit).
- get something like the Cuna cart. With some effort I could move it from current deck to new cabana easier. If I end up preferring it within the new cabana I wouldn't have a built-in space for it.
- build in a lowered seat for the egg within the new cabana outdoor kitchen. Would get rid of the table or Cuna cart ideas for the egg. Also would be putting a gas grill here.

If anything writing this out helps me, sort of cathartic. I'll become a TFP supporter and start a build thread soonish once I finalize a few more things. Sorry I didn't have a chance to put some pictures together but can later today if that helps. Thanks for the feedback from anyone who has gone through similar first world problems.

Where are you going to be eating the food you grill and smoke?

You have a few flows, one from the kitchen carrying the raw food out to the grill/smoker; then where you are going to go while the food is cooking and back and forth checking on the food; then serving the food from the grill/smoker to people eating.

If you are going to be eating in the house or on the deck then hauling the food back and forth through the fence gate to the grill/smoker will get to be a pain.

If the food will be eaten by the pool then you can carry it out there in raw form and cook it there, or cook it on the deck.

Any issues with the way the prevailing wind will blow smoke from the cooking around the pool?

Nice call outs, thanks! Lots to consider. Talked to builder today he said why don't I just only do the egg. I don't really mind lighting it and I do all cooks on it for past 5 years. Maybe I don't need a gas grill too. Going to think on it.

I would put grill in the new cabana/ outdoor kitchen if it was only the egg.

I've been thinking about a kamado for over a year, if I do it I'd probably go the red version. You love your egg?

We are in middle of build and doing a Cabana style setup too and I'm leaning towards not having the grill in the covered area and not doing a built in just yet. I wanna see how we use all the space and then adjust if needed.

I think with your setup I'd leave the egg on the deck. If you just wanna grill and eat inside it sounds like it would be annoying to have to haul all the way out to the pool. Also if you have a view from your deck of the pool area you can be the grill Meister viewing over the whole backyard party!

For your fire pit get one of those that double as a grill then you have two options!

Yes my family has greatly enjoyed it for all grilling and smoking. Nothing like smoking 80 chicken wings for a guys night, smoking a brisket low and slow, or going hot and fast for a steak or fish.

we are no longer doing this design however the location for things will be about the same in our final design. The spa is going on the back right in the latest iteration, sunshelf on bottom right.

The egg is currently sits on the left bump out on original deck. I'll have to check in on the doubled up firepit/grill. So far we really like the social aspect of the pit. We have a wood burning one in the yard, which is essentially a hole in the ground. Now looking forward to a more official looking gas one.

You need a gas grill, a separate burner (for cooking smelly food, we use this more than anything), and the egg. Each has its purpose.

Yeah I have heard this before. I was initially excited about doing both egg/gas-grill. Although I've had no problem firing up the egg and start cooking on it in 20-30m for grilling, or a little longer to smoke. Your outdoor kitchen is beautiful! I really like how you did the egg on the edge, if I do the lower seat on kitchen going use that concept.

I have my grill and next year an egg in my pool house kitchen. I took my other grill off the porch where it used to be and gave it away. So all my grilling is at my pool house now which is 30 feet from my house under full cover with commercial ventilation. Having the vent is so nice now. We eat in both places. Pool house kitchen and back porch. There r a ton of pics in my build thread for my setup.

thanks @jimim. At this point I'm going to put all my grilling/smoking in the upcoming outdoor kitchen. All utensils/tools will be out there, and have a sink to clean up is going to be nice. Today I often run between the home and attached deck to wash my hands or something after messing around with the egg. Or I burn through a lot of plastic gloves. Going to be nice to have a 'real' outdoor kitchen soon.

It’s awesome having a full kitchen outside now. Especially all under cover. I’m still getting used to what I need out there so I’m not going back and forth but it’s a learning experience. I spend a lot of time just sitting at the island reading vs even in our living space. I can’t wait to get my egg this spring. I love my new Weber gas grill though. Huge step up from the propane Weber I had.

Hmmm... in answer to your first post question.. I would be inclined to leave the cooking area near the house where you have closer access to the other food prep amenities. It separates the food prep production from the melee of the rest of the pool party. Do you want kids splashing water on your red hot egg? Save the cabana area for entertaining and dinning. The most food prep area I like having in the cabana area is a wet bar. ;)
I had an uncle that built a big outdoor kitchen on the patio and they would cook lambs or pigs on a spit.. everyone would get thier food and headed out to other places in the yard to eat.. no one wanted to sit on the patio with a carved up gutted animal looking at them.

To the op you may want to leave room for expansion. Other cooking gadgets like a griddle and a gas grill just a thought.

Hah ya these guys grill! Good thoughts. I'll have about 12 feet of kitchen space to play with. So far thinking: egg, gas grill, sink, refrigerator, storage cabs. Need some counter space for prep
Definitely need counter space. I use the air fryer and my induction burner out in the summer kitchen
