Run with No Filter Grid

So it takes all winter here for the leaves to fall of the trees and we get rain off and on. I have lots of trees around my pull and it stays green and full of leaves most of the winter. This requires massive amounts of attention and time that I do not have in the winter. I typically have to clean my filter three times over the three or four months.

My question. Can I remove the filter grid and just let the pump run when the temperature falls below freezing. I am not attempting to clean the water until all the leaves have fallen and I can get the pool cleaned back up and I don't believe I have the proper valves and such required to actually shut the pool down all the way down.

Do you have an MPV valve with a RECIRCULATE setting?
 
I think you should be able to run without the grids then.

Good. I actually cleaned and recharged them on Sunday (We had 20 degree temps last night and more tonight). I will let it roll through the winter until it gets clogged again. If all the leaves don't fall by then I will just take the grids out. If the leaves are done I will recharge and slam the pool. Then turn the heater on and swim.

One note, however. I don't know if any of those ideas will actually stop the "Leafs" (a Canadian Hockey team) but they will do well to stop "leaves" from clogging the skimmer. :LOL:

Yea, I really wish that would help. However, the problem isn't at the skimmer it is having a two inch think layer of leaves at the bottom of the pool and having to manually remove them every single day and sometime twice a day. I don't have the time for that. The only way to remotely fix the real issue is with a good leaf cover but I have yet to get one. All that being said, that leaf guard for the skimmer will keep me from having to sick my hand in that cold water to pull the basket out and empty it. Might have to try something like that.
